need some Tipps from Specialist :-)

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have some questions about Designer and Photo and hope you can help me.

1. Currently I use Adobe Fireworks for my Webwork. So sometimes I need more Path tools and sometimes I need more Photo Filters for enhancing colors etc.
What would be the best replacement for Fireworks? Regrettably, both tools have no Export preview like Fireworks, may it comes in an later Version?! At current, Fireworks has the best export compression on all filetype and this is very ineressting in image work for web. In the Designer I have´nt found Filters like in Photo. I´m sure that a preview would be very helpful not only for web image work.

2. when I open a image in Photo and open the lock symbol in the background layer (Panel), how can I change the size ob the canvas? Do I have to add another layer? How can I change the layer size then?

3. Is there a short cut to draw a object and move them instantly on the canvas without to select the move tool? Like moving the canvas with SPACE + left Mouse. Drawing the Object and move them immediately with SHIFT + left Mouse.... for example.

Thanks for any hint!

Cheers

Markus

Hi @MaGie,

Welcome to the forums.

  1. What do you mean by Export Preview? Neither Photo nor Designer allows any html coding, so what you see on the canvas will be what you get in the export. We have got a dedicated Export Persona for this purpose.
  2. After you unlock it, you choose the Move Tool - V and you can resize it on the canvas. To add a new layer, you go to Layer > New or you click on the New Pixel layer icon .

  3. You can move the object after you created it by moving the cursor next to an edge. This will become the "move" tool and you can move the object. But there is no shortcut.

Thanks,

Gabe.

Hello Gabe, thanks for your reply.

to 1. I think this questions is answered by MEB. I don´t need html code, I appreciate the preview windows in Fireworks. You can see the final result in two windows with the elected export parameters. FW shows even 4 previews with different .jpg compressions for example an this is very handy.

to 2. OK that noticed, but when I open a image, for example this is 500 x 300 px, but i like to add something to this image, so I have to resize the canvas. When I only move the Image, I will hide something cause the canvas is´nt greater than the image. In FW I can click a button: Resize canvas to objects and so the canvas will resized automatically to fit all objects in the file. Sorry, it´s a bitt difficult to describe in englisch for me :-(

to 3. when I draw a object.. for example rectangular, I can see only the touchpoints to transform it. There is no area where I could move it.  Only after I select the move tool it works. So it would be nice if I could move it without to select the move tool.

Cheers

Markus

Hi Markus,
Regarding questions 2: Go to File ▸ Document Setup... and set the new dimensions you want (this only works for non-artboard based documents). Alternatively, select the Artboard Tool, press the Insert Artboard button on the context toolbar to convert an existing non-artboard based document (canvas) into an artboard. You can then drag the boundaries of the artboard with the Artboard Tool or with the Move Tool - make sure the artboard layer is selected in the Layers panel - and in the case of the Move Tool also make sure that Lock Children is ticked in the context toolbar (which should be by default).

Regarding question 3: Place the cursor over the bounding box of the object you just draw (not over the handles). The cursor should change to a cross hair and enable you to move the object.

Hello MEB,

thanks for your reply.
to 2. OK so I will use Artboards in Designer and "Document -> Canvas resize" in Photo for that. Cause in Designer are no Filters like in Photo but I can work in both tools at the same time by sending the file into each other, will the file be synchronized when I use a filter in Photo and switch back to the same file in Designer?

to 3. I can see the cross hair, but I can´t move the drawed object. It just drawing again and again when I try to move it with left mouse button.

Cheers

2. You can send the document from Designer to Photo and vice versa using the command File ▸ Edit in Photo/Designer (depending on the app you are currently using). The whole file (with History included) will then be sent to that app. For some features like live filters/adjustments etc you only need to do this once. As soon as you add a live filter in Photo and send the document back to Designer you can double-click the Live filter in Designer to change its settings without the need to return to Photo.

3. What tool are you using to drag the object? If it's the Pen Tool it will start a new path instead because the bounding box is not drawn immediately when you finish the path so you have no way to place the cursor over it. This only works for the shape tools. Maybe you can improve things here. I will pass this to the dev team.

Juts a one note to add that you can set a shortcut for the Edit in Affinity Photo/Designer command in Affinity Preferences to speed up switching the document between apps.

OK I will try this. And what´s about the cross hair behavior? May there is a option which I must activate to move instead to draw with cross hair?

It depends on the object, I don't think you can do anything with the Pen Tool still selected, if that is what you used to draw the object. Using the arrow keys tends to move just one node.

Best to press the "V" key. This selects the Move Tool, you can then drag or use the arrow keys to nudge the object. If you press the "V" key again, it will return to the Pen Tool.

Windows PCs. Photo and Designer, latest non-beta versions.

Here's what i meant regarding the crosshair:

Ahhh OK, it was my fault. I have tried to move a quite small checkbox and the cross hair could´nt placed to the line between the noge. After I zoomed in, it works ;-)
Thanks a lot.

Cheers
