[AD] Add 22.5° as native

Recommended Posts

Dear Affinity,

I recently bought Affinity Designer and i have to admit that i'm verry happy with it.
As origami designer, i use it to create my patterns and diagrams. And in our world, many of our constructions are based on 22.5° angles.

By now we can easily create 45° and 90° lines by holding shift.
Would it be possible to add a 22.5° feature? Maybe as add-on or option?

Many of my collegues use others softwares who include that option (ex: inkscape). I'm pretty sure that many of them would join me under Affinity if that new feature is up.

Best regards,

- Octa

Welcome to the Serif Affinity Forums, Octa. :)

It would be good to have this as an option. It should probably even be enabled by default so that it’s easy for users to discover it.

Hi all.
Happy to see such a reactive and friendly community.

Thanks for the welcome!
I spend around 12h working on affinity today, such a great tool!
Hope to find how to handle all the tricks i need for my own designs =)

As you guys said, an option for customs angles or a native 22.5° would be great.
I think as option to set in preferences or custom angles would be the best.

Hi Guys.
I used AD since 2 months to draw Origami Books and I join Octa to tell that a 22.5° option is crucial for our origami community.
I tried to convinced more people to leave illustrator and Inkscape and join AD, creating for example a facebook group "Use Affinity Designer to draw your diagrams" https://www.facebook.com/groups/194635127849049/

But it's hard to convince them to move to AD without the 22.5° missing option.

Hope this could be include into the soft. That will help a lot to convince more Origami Designers to use AD.

@Ben, have you seen this thread? It seems a reasonable request (and seems more useful than 15° increments).

Although 22.5° is clearly more useful than 15° to some users, it’s going to be heavily dependent on your particular use case(s). A step of 7.5° would allow for both, but that would probably become a little ‘crowded’.

Another Shift/Alt key could be used. One for the larger step, other for the smoother.

The 15° increments only applies to rotation steps - it's not used for constraining (which is what happens when you hold Shift during a move or creation action).  Constraining is performed on grid axis, and with an option to constrain to "intermediate angles".  On a regular grid - that equates to the 45° position.  On another grid, such as an isometric, it'll be whatever angles is half way between the respective grid axis.

So - internally, there is no concept of an angle as such - it is derived from the grid axis angles.  We define these things in generic terms internally, so what I'd probably add is an option to set the divisions at which constraining occurs - currently only 1/2, but could add 1/3, 1/4, etc, up to a sensible maximum.  We currently don't have the concept of "fixed" angles, and I'd have to think hard about how I could add that without compromising the way we define our grids.

As Alred says, we don't want it to get too cluttered - as it would detract from usability.  1/4 divisions might be a sensible maximum.

On the other hand, 1/6 divisions on a regular grid would allow us to go all the way down to the 15° increments used for rotation steps. ;)

ok - it's something I can definitely look into for 1.7.

@Kensi13

Someone previously created a protractor for use in AD, maybe you could adapt/simplify it or make something similar for use in the Origami world of 22.5 degrees , until AD version 1.7 arrives next year.

Where did you read that AD version 1.7 isn’t going to be available until next year? :/

And maybe user definable angles? Something like this in Illustrator?

Does Illustrator just offer you this because it doesn't have the grid and axis features that we have?

Maybe they are too complicated for some users? Maybe they are used to use something they learned long time ago?

Maybe they were added as an overly complicated way of achieving what we have tried to make simpler with the grids and axis feature...?

I've only ever seen people use this for setting up isometric angles.

And maybe they can't see the full potential of this feature. Maybe in your training videos you should enumerate all fields of use for the appropriate feature(s).
