Staff MEB Posted June 11, 2018 Staff Posted June 11, 2018 You are getting better and better at this... Great choice of colours. Maybe the hair shadow near the left eye could be touched a little? It's too strong on red/orange. Rick G and Gabe 2 Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software

AffinityJules Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 Good heaven's above! You've made beautiful look more beautiful. Quote Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe. These are not my own words but I sure like this quote.
retrograde Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 Very nice! I'd be interested in a bit of info on your process. Designer? Photo? Recolour or blend mode layers? Stuff like that... cheers! Recolour or blend mode layers? Stuff like that... cheers! Sure. I start by creating a solid basic shape ( rectangle, circle ). Next, I mask it to fit the portion I need to colour. I always use blending modes, soft light being the most used. I usually work on just one layer of colour per "basic" parts (like the book, background, dress) and about 10 different layers for skin, with different opacity and different colours, trying to mimic the "SSS - subsurface scattering" of the skin. SSS is mainly a 3D rendering technique, but we still need to make the character to look "alive" rather than Waxy. ( Reddish skin on the ears, yellowish/reddish close to the bones, more desaturated for "shadows" areas, etc) Hand detail: MEB, Alfred, Chris B and 4 others 7 Quote
retrograde Posted June 12, 2018 Posted June 12, 2018 Thanks for that explanation GabrielM. It's good to see how others work with this greyscale/colour workflow. I like the SSS mention and the screenshot of your soft-edges hand painting layer too. Interesting that you mostly use "soft light" blend mode. I am finding using a coloured shape with a "recolour" effect set to "colour" blend mode as opposed to using just a blend mode only on a coloured layer for my experiments is providing the "magic" I need. That "recolour" effect is pretty versatile and consistent.
