Layer mask invert not working

Something strange happened today.  Layer masks are auto filled in black when I creats a layer mask now.  And I can not invert it.  What did I do?  It was working before.  I am not sure if it is something I did.  Please help.

Can you apply a Mask Layer to a test image and upload the .afphoto file or apply a Mask and post a screenshot showing your layers panel.

I've not been able to get a Layer Mask auto fill black unless i add a Fill Layer and not a mask layer.  With a sample file or screenshot, we should be able to work out whats going on

Thanks for your replies.  It is now fixed although I am not sure how I did it.  Somehow I got to an option I unticked and now it works.  Now I can't find it.  If I do I will post it here in case it helps others.
