AD: Solid outline, transparent fill?

Recommended Posts

I need to get an outline to overlap some lines in a design. How should I approach this?

I have been trying to create a second triangle to sit on the first triangle, effectively sandwiching the white lines between two layers of black.

But if I select the white box with a red line through it - to remove the fill color from the top triangle - the outline also disappears.

Keep the Fill colour in the Triangle but In the Outline effects screen set Fill opacity to zero

Hi gumbo23,
Select all the white line layers in the Layers panel and drag them over the blue triangle layer (not over its thumbnail but over the area on the right) to clip them. I believe this is what you want to do. Let me know if not.

Do you have a way of showing me what you mean?

If I select and drag them above the blue triangle nothing changes.

I do want to clip off the white lines.

Hi gumbo23,
I have deleted my previous reply as i wasn't sure about what do you want to achieve. If you want show the white lines just inside the blue triangle area, remove the Outline FX applied to the triangle and give it a black stroke instead. This will keep all elements as vectors (layer Effects are all raster based). Then select all the white line layers in the Layers panel and drag them over the blue triangle layer (not over its thumbnail but over the area on the right) to clip them.

Have you watched my link?

Please see my reply above. It should do what you want.

I don't understand your suggestion.

"Select all the white line layers in the Layers panel and drag them over the blue triangle layer (not over its thumbnail but over the area on the right) to clip them."

How do I drag them OVER the triangle? Do you mean above? This is how the layers are arranged now.

Is there a video showing what you mean?

Yes, but I found no answers to the clipping question.

Is this a feature at all, or do I have to manually shorten each white line?

Sorry, I correct the link.
You have to move all the lines you want to truncate according to the blue triangle.

This has worked - thanks Carl.

I now need to clip off the white lines. How do I do this?

Assuming you don't care if it remains a pure vector design or not you can just switch to the pixel persona, select the Erase Brush Tool and erase the parts of the "white" lines outside the 2nd triangle

PS If you group all the white lines first (CTRL+G) you only need to select that group layer to erase across all lines at the same time, rather than selecting each line individually.
