Care to share the sauce? Sounds delicious 🍽️ .

For clarity though, the simple gradient worked perfectly... Granted the stripes are evenly spaced.
What didn't was using absolute values of 0%,25%, 50%, 75% % 100% for the brush segments. (I didn't try 0-255 values, just %s)

Here is the secret sauce: A PT filter with 2 input values:

a - number of stripes incl. gaps, minus 1

b - pixel size (height)

It creates stripes of grey:

  • 2: 2 stripes + 1 gap, 0 and 255
  • 4: 3 stripes + 2 gaps, 0, 127, 255
  • 6: 4 stripes + 3 gaps, 0, 85, 170, 255

If you want the stripes of same width (pixels), you need to increase the canvas size / rectangle size and input value b.

If you don't want the transparent gap, deactivate the alpha formula by clicking on "A" once in the PT filter UI. You will get n+1 levels of grey without any gap between stripes.

Why do the many gradient stops need to be so precise? Any haphazard placement in the gaps will work fine.

Hi @JimmyJack,

I think that having the stops placed exactly at the boundaries of each line ensures that the colors on them are consistent on each line, since the stop values are identical.
This is certainly due to my propensity for precision, and this one often makes me complicate my life!

But if the stop values are identical then the midpoints are irrelevant... and (trying) to place them exactly actually increases the likelihood of color invasion across shape boundaries. Especially since interior gradient nodes don't snap to geometry.

Sloppiness is easier AND safer 😉 😅.
These are identical in terms of color after all:
(Again assuming transparency between shapes here.)

LOL. Okay okay. I get it (I struggle a bit with it myself). That's all I'm gonna say 🤐 😊
