Corrupted/distorted pdf export from AD

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just starting to experiment with Designer having been a happy APH user for some time.

Does anyone have any idea why exporting this to PDF:

885221673_ScreenShot2018-05-29at21_31_35.png.d202193c890d5910f2fee205cdb8d468.png

Gives me this:

I've attached the .afdesign file (including history) and the .pdf, which was exported using the default Print settings at 300dpi.

Cheers,

h_d

Try exporting using PDF/X-4

Thanks @firstdefence, that certainly creates an uncorrupted pdf, but I'd be interested to know why the 'print' default (and also web, attached) give such clunky results.

From within the PDF Export for Print, then clicking on the More Button, the corruption stops when Under the compatibility drop down list you select PDF 1.4 (Acrobat 5) From there down it will export correctly, so It's something to do with PDF 1.5, 1.6, 1.7

Note: just exported with PDF 1.7 and ran the PDF through a Validator and it successfully completed with the message...

Quote

Validating file "splat.pdf" for conformance level pdf1.7

The document does conform to the PDF 1.7 standard.

Done.

Affinity Designer opens the file correctly and so does PDF Expert, in fact every app I've tried opens the file fine, so its Apples Preview that seems to be the problem.

I've gone through the history step by step, exporting each time with the Print default, and it kicks in when the line style is changed to brush:

Which I suppose is quite artistic, but not what I wanted to achieve... ;)

I'm getting a sense of Kandinsky circa 1921 O.o I re saved it as a pdf from Preview and it rotated the corrupted image 90º, I think we have the makings of a plugin here lol

Just tried again from Preview and exported as PDFX-3 and it opens fine in Preview and other apps, so whatever that brush is doing it aint good for PDF's.

I have a go and create something similar my end to see if I can recreate it.

Talking of consistency, what brush are you using for the stroke?

Have you tried it with a gradient fill though - specifically a radial gradient?

One of the default textured brushes, but the history doesn't show which, and I've since quit AD so I can't be sure precisely.

Interesting how the textured brushes don't quite join up at the start/end of the stroke:

Fail, or fail not. There is no try.  (© Yoda). Thanks though. Glad I've got the history, it must be a one-off glitch.

Bugs me big time with that, it really shouldn't do that.

You need to break the curve so that the texture can spill over the end nodes.

Still not great, I think it needs quite a bit more work to get it right, works better when you break all the node points on say a square.

Hi all,

The "problem" is that your document is in 16bit/RGB, and the standard preview on mac does not support 16bit images in PDF. At this point, you have 3 choices:

  • Use Adobe Acrobat Reader to preview and print your documents (or any other software that supports 16 bit)
  • Export as PDF > More > Compatibility > PDF 1.4 (this version only supports 8bit and will convert any 16 or higher to 8)
  • Change your document to 8bit in Document Setup

Thanks,

Gabe.

Good to know!

FWIW, I exported the original Affinity file to 16bit/RGB PDF & tried opening it in most of the apps installed on my system that are at least capable of displaying PDFs. All my browsers (Google Chrome, Safari, & even an out-of-date version of Opera), ColorSync Utility, an unlicensed trial version of EasyDraw, GraphicConverter 9, Nisus Writer Pro, Quicktime Player 7, & of course Affinity Designer & Affinity Photo all displayed the 16bit PDF fine. Only Preview, File Viewer & a few other apps that I think use the same (standard?) display 'engine' as Preview, & Quick Look displayed it corrupted.

All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V2.4.1 Mac apps; 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7

Thanks for clearing that up Gabe, makes sense now.
