James Ritson and Technicolor

Recommended Posts

I've followed James Ritson's video tutorial on replicating the technicolor effect in Affinity Photo.

https://player.vimeo.com/video/155520871/

I've followed the steps carefully, and checked to make sure that all recolour values were set as stated in the video (R=180, G=300, B=60). But I get yellows transformed into a shade of pink.

Can anyone suggest what I might be doing wrong? I'd really like to learn how to use this technique to emulate different types of colour film.

Hi @dkj Add your afphoto file to the post so we can take look to see if we can spot where you went wrong.

Update: I've done the same process and got the same result.

Have you set the HSL adjustment to 180 in the Hue Shift and what blend mode are you using on the Red, Green and Blue layers?

In the video tutorial the main subject’s dress starts out yellow and ends up pink, so perhaps there’s nothing wrong here except that the result was unexpected.

Ive just had a mix around with the HSL settings and it took a bit of fiddling but I got this result.

Like he said at the very beginning of the vidéo (18'), it's usually used for skin tones (portraits), like LUTs they are made for specific conditions.
So you can apply an indoor color correction to an outdoor picture but it'll look weird, same here.

I added a Curves adjustment layer to the top of the layer stack and set it to CMYK (also suggested in the video). Then by playing around with the M curve I was able to correct the image somewhat. But Mareck's answer tells me what I needed to know.

I'd love to see a tutorial about using Affinity Photo to mimic different types of vintage colour film.

Look about LUT's, color grading, and raw topics.
And in case you're not aware of, there is a great tutorial section in the forum, with lot of subject.
