Kulashaker
Hi Just signed up here so please bear with me.... I've been trying to stack some night images to make a star trail image. Is there a limit to how many images that can be put together? Affinity Photo always seems to give up the ghost. Ive been trying to put together 100 images. Then 50. And nothing. Although it says its loading a document, it never does. Unless its going to take hours and I'm not patient enough? Thanks K
Staff Gabe Posted May 8, 2018 Staff Share Posted May 8, 2018 HI @Kulashaker, Welcome to the forums. The speed of the stack would be greatly influenced by the RAM, and by the file size of your photos. When you're stacking images, most of the info will be stored in RAM for the duration of the process. I suggest you give it a go with 10 images and see how it goes. But I'm pretty sure that 100 photos will take at least 15-20 minutes. I gave it a quick try with 90 images ( 300kb each ) and it took about 1 minute. If you're working with raw files( 30mb+ each file ), you can expect longer waiting times. Thanks, Gabe.
John Rostron
Could you tell us more about your files? Are they raw, or developed? What bit depth? What size are they? It would speed things up if your files were small, and of low bit depth. Do you need 16 bits for a star shot? Would an 8-bit png be sufficient for your needs? I am thinking that star shots would have a relatively low range of colours. To get an 8-bit png you would have to develop any raw file first, which would take time, but the png would stack much faster. You mention star trail images. Are you aiming to stack images showing a short trail to give a composite with a long trail?
