I just purchased Affinity Photo and can't wait to ditch my subscription to Adobe CC2018.  However, I mostly work with text and am having trouble finding tutorials to answer my questions.  First up:  how do I create a stroke around text to make the font fatter?

Thanks

On my 13" laptop the stroke controls for the text tool context tool bar are "off screen" and accessed by clicking the double arrow at the far right of the toolbar:

Hi,

Thanks to both of you for trying to help.  However, I don't see the bar to increase stroke size. Perhaps I knocked5ae628bf660ff_Examplestroking.thumb.png.222cc54326d05a6378de71e1ba241f1e.png everything out of whack when trying to figure this out.  See attachment for how my screen looks.

Thanks

If you have the Stroke colour well selected,

stroke.jpg.504bb37bd2c6ef1021ecb38bedc92c9f.jpg

It will be overlapping the fill colour well if selected.

select the Colour Picker (eyedropper) and on the Context toolbar, tick Apply to selection

If you click on the fill colour (on the font) it will be applied to the Stroke.

I didn't see "apply to selection" but I was able to get it to work using your other suggestions.  Thanks!!

When you select the Colour Picker Tool, Apply to Selection automatically appears on the Context Toolbar, above.

Does anyone else get this effect? This happens when the stroke is aligned to the outside, the centre and inner stroke align doesn't show this.

You might be better off using Effects > Outline it gives more favourable results.

When the stroke is aligned to outside, and the stroke and fill colours are the same, yes:

@h_d yes I have just amended my post to say the same with the addition that on the inner and centre align it looks ok.

Since the upgrade to v1.7.x, there are no stroke color or weight controls on the context toolbar, and no pullout to access more; is there any way to restore them?

Text stroke controls are now located in the "Decorations" section of the Character Studio panel. I am not sure why this was moved from the context toolbar but possibly it was to make more room for the other text related items there.

It is easy to overlook this because unless you click on either the stroke or color swatch there it is not obvious they are buttons that open the controls.

I also found it very frustrating that this moved and had a hard time finding it.

In addition to using the decorator panel, I found that in  1.7 that if I select the "node" tool, that is the triangle-shaped tool above the shape tool,  and then click on the text, the stroke options are available in the context menu on the top of the screen.  If however you try and select the tool the traditional way the context menu is not displayed.

If you select a text object with the Node Tool, stroke attributes made on the context toolbar are applied to the entire text object. That works well enough for strokes that are a small faction of the font size, but for anything wider, with most fonts I find I usually have to open the Character panel anyway to adjust the tracking or possibly other attributes to get acceptable looking results.

Thank you, that's a workaround, anyhow; as for why they changed it, as my screen cap shows, there's still room for both stroke color and weight controls on the Move tool context toolbar--note there is no longer a ">>" pullout--so functionally speaking, they took them away and did not replace them with anything ... !

Having to switch from one set of controls (context toolbar) to two (toolbar + Character->Decorations) to accomplish the same tasks is extra clicks/keystrokes/time nobody's workflow needs; given that, it would be nice if we had the option to add back the stroke controls ourselves using the "View -> Customize Toolbar ..." menu.

Boh I read all what above, and I have not any "stroke" on the test ...

Affinity Photo 2.0.4 ...

If you have a question, or problem, I think we'll need more of a description. Also some screenshots. And a sample .afphoto file would be nice.

Can we see a complete screenshot of the fill application window? And, as I mentioned, the .afphoto file would be useful.

Also, how did you try to assign a stroke?

Sorry I can't disclose the file.

Is it a problem with this one specific file? Or can you recreate it in a file you can share?

By selecting the text:

And then what? Nothing in the Context Toolbar assigns a stroke to text. For that you would use the Stroke panel, or the Appearance panel (where available), or a Style, or possibly a Text Style.

Try just selecting the layer then activate the pen tool, this should now enable the stroke in the context bar

Thank you Murfee. It helped.

Meanwhile I also see that if I select the shape tool the stroke appears.

Although I can't understand why such common stuff is not in the menu it's supposed to be.
I mean: i select the TEXT, I want this kind of tool right available also on the Text. Why isn't there and it's somewhere else? So not intuitive and not practical AT ALL.

and one should come to ask for help for such banal function ...

I mean this is the version 2.0.4 and again we got this kind of not ergonomy at all.
