Feather Selection

Could someone please tell me, step by step, how the feather selection tool works because whatever I am doing is not getting the job done. I am selecting a simple rectangle filled with colour and then tapping on the feather selection tool which produces a dialogue box, into which I type the number 10 - feather the edge 10 pixels. But nought happens.

The feather selection tool works the other way around. You set the feather first and then make a selection. Have a look here on our selection guides for more info

Feathering a selection works OK for me when I do as the OP described, but (as I would expect) I don’t see the effect of the feathering until I duplicate the selection and hide the original layer.
