I suddenly have 'marching ants' going round the edge of my document. Where did they come from and how do I stop them? What is their purpose?

Hi jackamus,

They represent a pixel selection. They show you what's currently selected. You may have pressed ⌘ (cmd) and clicked on the thumbnail of a layer accidentally which creates a pixel selection from that object. You can get rid of them going to menu Select ▸ Deselect or pressing ⌘ (cmd) +D.

They are scouting for food.

If you leave a jammy fingerprint on your screen they'll swarm around for hours.

I think the lesson here is to always have clean hands before making selections. o.O

I spent 5 minutes pondering a witty reply to this but I gave up and carried on scratching!

If you think that was a groaner, be glad I did not go with my first idea about converting them to dancing ants by playing music they can't resist dance to, like anything by Adam & the Ants.

Are you adamant about that? :/

Your reference to “music they can’t resist [dancing to]” reminds me of Ogden Nash’s words in his poem about ants:

Would you be calm and placid

If you were full of formic acid?

Tempted to remake the ants dance above there, but in 3D, with current gen level of sculpting and PBR texturing / rendering. Of course, reaching some agreement with whoever holds the rights of the music.

Just for fun.
