iTux
Hi, I was trying to create a shape by overlapping a circle shape with another circle shape (the 2nd circle was only the stroke and with no fill) when I tried to crop (subtract) the first circle with the 2nd circle the program cut the shape as if there 2nd circle had a fill and ignoring it was only the stroke (see attached). I had to convert the circle in to a donut to perform this. Thanks
Guest
Hello iTux, Select the two outer circles, "Layer" menu, "Expand Stroke". Then select the three circles and do the "Subtract" operation.

The Geometry operations only work with filled shapes, not strokes. iTux 1 Quote Alfred Affinity Designer/Photo/Publisher 2 for Windows • Windows 10 Home/Pro Affinity Designer/Photo/Publisher 2 for iPad • iPadOS 17.4.1 (iPad 7th gen)

Drag them inside the main shape. Change the blend mode to Erase. This way it's non destructive and you won't have to expand the strokes. FrantaB
How can I say it is a more complex object? In Corel Draw, the outline went from the object and then subtracted it. unfortunately it's not here :-(
Staff MEB Posted May 31, 2019 Staff Share Posted May 31, 2019 Hi FrantaB, Welcome to Affinity Forums I'm not sure I understood your post properly so apologies if this doesn't address your issue. Affinity Designer (which I believe is what you are using since you mentioned CorelDraw) isn't able to perform boolean operations (Add, Subtract etc) between shapes and lines - only between shapes. So if you need to subtract a line from a shape you have to first convert it (the line) to a shape going to menu Layer > Expand Stroke with the line selected. You can then perform the subtract operation as usual. Let me know if you still have issues or I haven't addressed it properly.
