Text and transparency

This is something I discovered by accident but believe it to be a bug.

I have a large filled shape which I am typing in text.

I select the Artistic tool  and click its position in the filled shape and type '8'. If I then reselect the Artistic tool and click in the filled shape no type appears but the shape adopts a transparency which I have to remove using the Opacity slider. However I can't always reproduce this. Some how whatever I'm doing is causing a change in opacity when I'm nowhere the Opacity slider as my pallets are on a second monitor. Any ideas?

There are keyboard shortcuts that change the transparency of layers (shapes) if the Move tool or Shape tool is selected. e.g. press 33 to get 33% 8 to get 80% opacity, 0 for 100%.

 

It will also change the Opacity of brushes, if a brush tool is selected.

 

It won't do it if the Text tool is selected.

 

In other words, be careful what you have selected when you press a number key

I was able to replicate it and that is exactly what happened. Problem solved.

Yes, this is very unpleasant.
For example, if you enter the line thickness, and you think the focus stays on the input field.

Wouldn't it less aggravating if one of the three control keys were used as well as number key or adding transparency?

It's used on other apps this way, so it would be confusing to modify this behaviour.

And I usually use ctrl/cmd/alt + number for applying characters or paragraphs styles, or diplaying color channel.

 

Perhaps you can reassign those shortcuts on yours applications ? (I can't check right now if it's possible).

There are no custom keyboard shortcut assignments for setting layer transparency in either Affinity app that I can find.

 

I would be very surprised if there were because this feature depends on the timing between keypresses to set the transparency, so for instance typing 4 sets it to 40% while typing 4 followed  quickly by typing 5 sets it to 45%. That probably has to be hard coded into the app because normally, keyboard shortcuts accept only one non-modifier key, with no provision for a delay to accept an optional second non-modifier key.

 

Jackamus, for completeness note that typing 0 (zero) by itself sets layer transparency to 100%. From what I can tell, so does typing any 3 number keys in quick succession.
