Raymondo
Have not tested the program much yet but initially I would say 1) Type tool icon for me needs to be represented by a "T" not "A". 2) I find the tool bar and icons generally to be too child like rather than professional looking. Personally I would prefer the icons to be more illustrator like i.e white/grey against black background. Cut out this colour representation rubbish, it makes it look too aimed at the amateur market. I think the illustrator representation is far better to indentify and navigate. 3) Don't like the large blue circles on the bounding box, I find it distracting! 4) In Illustrator you can select several items by simply pulling a bounding box over them but I don't seem to be able to do the same in Affinity Designer. Would be helpful. All in all I need to play with this program a bit more as I'm sure I'm missing things yet but it seems to me it has a fair way to go to rival Illustrator. I hated the fact that Adobe went to subscription only and would not engage or support such a practice. I thought then, I hope someone develops a truly professional alternative so I'm keeping my fingers crossed you get it right. Having said this I can remember when Indesign first came on the scene, and then I was using QuarkExpress. The first incarnation was ok but it did fall short in many areas but I somehow knew it was going to be better than QurkExpress. When version 2 came out it was finally a serious contender and many of the bugs were sorted out, particularly with printing and the program looked and felt like QuarkExpress only much better in all respects. I finally jumped ship! Here I think I'm witnessing a same event so go get em guys!
Staff MattP Posted August 6, 2014 Staff Share Posted August 6, 2014 Hi Raymondo, User interface and style is always open to interpretation, so I'm not going to comment on that other than to say that we're not aiming to be a visual clone of Illustrator. However, I can definitely answer your last point - by default we only select objects completely contained by your selection marquee, whereas Illustrator selects those that are touched by your selection marquee... both have merits... so we included a modifier key that toggles the behaviour: Hold down Ctrl during your drag and you'll start selecting items that are touched by the marquee, just like Illustrator. I might make this a global preferences for those who are too used to Illustrator's methods... Thanks, Matt
Staff Dave Harris Posted August 6, 2014 Staff Share Posted August 6, 2014 We have two type tools, and so two icons. The "A" creates Artistic text. Frame text does use a "T". We could use "T" for both, but there'd be less visually to distinguish them so I think the Frame text icon would need to be redesigned too.
