Realistic vector portrait of Abe Lincoln

Created this from scratch in Affinity Designer. Zero pixels, all vector. Not finished yet, but progressing nicely. Used a lot of swatches, transparency, blurring on areas and custom vector brushes. This is my first attempt at a realistic vector portrait. Original drawing 40 x 50 cm. Progress sequence will be posted in my portfolio blog once completed.

Looks good so far. The gritty vintage styles means the skin looks more realistic. I've seen quite a few supposedly realistic ones where they're totally smooth and it just looks wrong on a man, like plastic. That's part of the reason why people choose women wearing make up as then they don't have to worry about that.

Thanks VVD. You're probably correct with regard to the more common way to create portraits, but I've long searched for a program that allowed me to make vector portraits, without having to revert to the tedious mesh fill tool like present in Illustrator and CorelDRAW, which isn't a method that feels natural. AD actually has the alternative that works great to which they added the non-destructive, parametric option that is wonderful and much less time consuming for portrait artists. Now I can enlarge the image to whatever size is desired without losing detail and crispness. Added an update that includes texturing in the hair and beard. On to the neck and costume next. Cheers.

Still messing with the colours. In the Corel suit, the colours used in a drawing are stored in the program's task bar, which makes it easy to re-use colours already applied. Perhaps this is an idea for a feature to be implemented?

There's a way to sort of do that as long as you haven't too many colours. Swatches pallette>Hamburger menu>Create Palette From Document then probably As Document Palette rather than System/Application. You can only show one set of swatches at a time though which might be a problem and of course it's not dynamic. But you can always delete it and recreate it.

Your skill set is way above mine; but even I can tell by the updates that you really love Affinity and just have to keep pushing that envelope. The effort shows and by the look of it, I reckon you're enjoying every minute of it!
