Can I use the rectangle or circle tool in Designer to make a shape and then modify small section like with pen tools or do I have to start from scratch with pen tool? You’ve posted in the iPad subforum, but since you mention Designer I presume you’re working on a Mac or a Windows PC. When you choose the Move Tool and select a shape made with the Rectangle Tool or the Ellipse Tool, you should see a ‘Convert to Curves’ button on the Context toolbar. Once you’ve pressed that, you can use the Node Tool to tweak the shape to your heart’s content, but useful results are often more easily achieved by adding or subtracting other shapes. To this end, you may find it helpful to spend some time becoming familiar with the commands invoked by the buttons in the Geometry section on the main toolbar.
