Yes, double-clicking is an easy way to rename the layer but it would also be nice to be able to set a hotkey, for example, F1, to change the currently selected layer name. It would be nice to have a hotkey for this, but F1 (at least on Windows) is the standard hotkey for displaying the Help. F2 seems the obvious choice, since it’s often used for renaming.
