Mr Lucky
All the other tools are fine (e.g. rectangular, column), but nothing happens when I choose the elliptical marquee tool. I must be missing something very obvious, can anyone please help?

You need to switch to the new light user interface. You can also tweak the Background Grey Level etc. Edit > Preferences > User Interface I just can't see the older dark interface. It has no effect on the coloring of the toolbars, panels, etc. Adjusting the UI Gamma may help, but other than that I think that switching to the light interface may be the only good solution for Mr Lucky. R C-R
I agree with @Pšenda. The contrast in much of the Affinity UI is too low, which among other things makes it difficult to see which tool is selected in the Tools panel & which modes are enabled in the toolbars. firstdefence
Strangely, I like the light interface option in Affinity Designer with the background grey level set to mid way and the other settings left at default. In Affinity Photo I prefer the dark theme with Background Grey set to mid way, Gamma UI all the way to the left.
