You have provided far too little info to know what you are referring to. Which app are you using? Where do you see this, whatever it is?

It may help if you open a photo, take a screenshot that shows the things you're talking about, and attach that to a post so we can see what it looks like. Then we can help you with the terminology and, with luck, an answer to your question.

I think you're trying to work with a photo format that is not well supported yet. Are you a Mac user, trying to process HEIC (?) photos taken on an iPhone and transferred to your Mac? I think there is a known issue with that.

From Miguel’s comment at the end of that thread, it sounds as though iOS is just as badly affected as OS X or macOS.
