Workbook Problem. Lumsdale Falls.

Recommended Posts

Firstly I’ll start off by saying hello since this is my first post.

I’ve been using affinity photo for the best part of a year I guess. I think it’s fair to say I have muddled through by a variety of experimenting and using YouTube.

recently I thought I would add a bit more structure to my learning with the Affinity Photo Workbook. I would overall say it is going quite well. I am struggling with Project 2, Lumsdale Falls though.

For the life of me I can’t get the Paintbrush to have any effect when I am trying to adjust the tones in the water. I have been over and over it making sure I have created a new layer and that all my settings are correct etc etc. All to no avail though.

I’m currently using a MacBook Pro as I am abroad for a while. If I was at home I would be using my iMac. It could well be me being thick but I’m starting to wonder if it’s a bug.

its probably hard to tell without actually seeing what I’m doing but maybe it’s a problem that’s occurred before and somebody can put their finger on it?

Any advice would be much appreciated, I haven’t got a lot of hair left as it is and you may just save me losing the last few remnants.

I think it would be very helpful if you posted a screenshot of the workspace with layers and tools/context toolbar.

Hello. Yes I will try that tomorrow if I get chance. I had previously got a lot further with the project, almost to the end in fact. But now I can barely get beyond the start so could be my MacBook. I will see how far I can get and do screenshots along the way.

Thank you.

Hello again.

Sorry it has been much longer than expected before I have got back to this. Here is a screenshot of where I get un to before I can't get any further. I think I have all the settings correct. So at this stage when I paint over the water it has no effect at all.

Thank you.

Hardness is also not good.

Hardness at 0% is fine and is desirable for a softer edge (it's specified in the book). It definitely looks like a flow issue, Flow should be set to 100% by default - have you perhaps changed it at some point, or are you using a custom/different brush? If in doubt, switch to the Basic brush category and choose one of the first few brushes (up to the 128px sized brush) - they're all guaranteed to have 100% flow and accumulation.

Hi.

Yes I think I changed the flow when "trying" to create a Watermark brush (which I did manage after a couple of attempts).

I have now completed the lesson successfully.

Thanks to all for their help.

OK, i expected the same behavior as with Flow and Opacity. When something is zero, it just should not be at all.

But not hardness. It may help to think of 0% hardness as 100% softness. :)

Yes, that is obvious. But 100% softness is so soft, that it does not even draw. Like 0% opacity is 100% transparency, therefore absolute transparency which is invisibility.

The setting controls the hardness of the edges of brush tools, not their overall effect. At 0% hardness, the edges are indeed 100% transparent.
