Starting to understand the layer functions in AP. I use a white rectangular layer between background and the layer that I draw on; this white layer's opacity I change to see the background and the result of my drawing. Mostly used various (customized) Brushes, the Smear tool and the Burn and Dodge tool. Some effect filters. This portrait was drawn from scratch and many temporary layers have been merged down. Actual size of the portrait is 60 x 46 cm, reference image was a small b&W photograph. What I would like to see in the Layer Adjustment functions is a button to see the original state to compare with applied function.

Not sure if this is what you mean but if you want to look at a single layer without the pain of changing all your selections, on my iPad version I can select SOLO from the layers studio to temporarily hide all layers except the selected one. Sorry I’m not near my desk top to see what the equivalent keystroke is.

In Faststone image viewer there are some options to edit an image. In the attached screendump, indicated by the red arrow at the right, there is a button that allows to toggle between the original image and the version to which the changes are applied. It allows to compare the changes before applying them and there also is a reset button to go back to the original image if the changes you made are not satisfactory (after which you can have an other go at applying changes).

Option/Alt-clicking on the original image layer will disable any added adjustment layers. Click on an adjustment layer to re-enable all the adjustments.

Every action in Affinity Photo is made visible in real time, but there is no way to compare the effect of intended actions relative to the original before actually applying them, not having to undo and make an additional attempt afterwards.

Have you tried a live filter layer ?

Filter-> New Live Filter Layer

This gives you non destructive edits you can return to later or remove entirely.

I have tried that. I merely wanted to say that there's no 'preview' option that allows to compare the difference between the original and the intended alterations. I'm not say the current functions don't do the job, just exploring alternatives, which probably is feasible for the Serif developers since they don't have to bother with 'legacy code' like developers of other programs that are available (at huge costs) in the same field.

Do you mean like the before and after slider on this live filter layer on the iPad version.

That is exactly what I mean, Paul, but I can't find similar options in the 'Adjustments' and 'Layer Effects' at the bottom of the layers panel. Such an option is great to get better control of adjustments.

I just found a way to do it! I work on a PC and there's a 'Tone Mapping Persona' that allows to view in split screen or Mirrored screen mode. This gives perfect previews. Sorry, new to AP, still learning the tricks of the trade.
