YURII
Hello, Ive noticed that in Mac Affinity photo app Anti-aliasing is on by default, which simplifies cutout process (almost no need for refinements when using Free hand selection tool), it appears that there is no anti-aliasing in iPad app of Affinity, or am I mistaken? Staff MEB Posted February 7, 2018 Staff Share Posted February 7, 2018 Hi YURII, Have you turned it on in the iPad? With the Polygon Marquee Tool tool selected, check if the last icon on the top right on the context toolbar (looks a triangle) has an outline around the circle. If so the antialiasing is enabled. If not, tap the icon to turn the antialiasing on - the outline around the circle should appear. YURII
So, if there is outline it means its ON, right? It was without outline, I did try it again with AA ON, and it seems that its not doing the best job here. Is there some settings that I could use to refine my selection? I tried to play with Refine selection settings, but I cant get it to work the way I want it to - It gives out blurred edge.
YURII
Somehow PS is cutting out anything you throw at it perfectly out of the box, and Im talking here about Lasso tool. That what I expect from Affinity, but instead it gives me those jagged edges, even though AA is ON. Any workarounds there?
Staff MEB Posted February 7, 2018 Staff Share Posted February 7, 2018 That icon is to turn antialiasing ON. So if there's an outline around the circle, it means the antialiasing has been turned ON - which is what you want - the pixels around the selection will become semi-transparent. Antialias is turned OFF by default. Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software | Affinity Quick Reference
YURII
Ok, this image I tried to cutout using AP on iPad using free hand selection tool - AA is ON and there is 3pix feather applied.
YURII
How to achieve this kind of smoothness though?
YURII
Both of those images are zoomed 100% by the way. And the thing is, I really want to use free hand selection tool, because it gives me the best control over the stuff that I want to cut out. Paul Mudditt
I have just done this cutout as an example on the Affinty Photo Facebook group, took me 10 minutes using the pencil tool in smart mode. Not really sure what the anti -alias issue you have. If you can post the full photo I can do a video of the steps. Quote My dad always told me, a bad workman always blames their tools…. Paul Mudditt
Quick demo on your partial photo, with a little more care I could have corrected a few of the nodes to give a smoother appearance. 3B5877C9-7378-4C47-9792-C54C1353C79E.MOV Quote My dad always told me, a bad workman always blames their tools…. YURII
@Paul Mudditt thank you so much for your help, but I still haven't figured it out. So, to clarify, I'm an architectural visualisation artist, and I use cutout people a lot. SO, I just wanted to try to cut them out myself using iPad and Affinity, but no matter how I try to cut things out, it gives me that jagged edge all around, which I have a hard time figuring out how to solve. Attached is whole dude, that I used for testing purposes, hope you can achieve a better result. Also, there is no problem with cutting things out using AP on desktop or PS on desktop, those apps somehow feather all the cutouts automatically and without my need to be involved. img_9485.afphoto

Then start cutting out the inside parts, again using pencil in smart mode then to selection, then inverting selection and duplicate layer, then deselect. Repeat this second step until all inside sections removed. There are are other ways to do this but this is the workflow I used here. https://www.dropbox.com/s/fk66ey4ozktd59t/img_9485-X.afphoto?dl=0 I have left all the intermediate layers in as a guide but they can of course be deleted. YURII
Thanks, but pencil tool takes a whole lot of effort to use, I thought maybe there could be a faster way with the same precision.
Alfred
The Smart Selection Brush Tool does a pretty good job, but you’re always going to have to deal manually with low-contrast areas such as the jacket and the handles of the bag against the dark background. YURII
Is there a place I can request Serif team to take a closer look on that Antialias feature? So, maybe they could try and make it to work the way it works on Mac?
