I am a rookie. When using the content removal inpainting tool, The  area content is removed,

But it is replace with a "Smudge Area" of mixed colors.

Without seeing the image, it's hard to advise whats happening and how to improve it.

 

I know when i've used the inpainting brush to remove items, sometimes using a smaller brush can help and if you try to remove the item in sections.  If you can post a picture of the results you get and also the image, myself and others can advise further.

The Inpainting tool works great at what it does, but it sometimes tries to exceed its limitations. As Stokerg said, smaller bites are often the answer. I also use the clone tool to fix things if they get a little muddy.
