Worth a mention the new Cintiq (non-pro) just released by Wacom. Is 1080p only (is enough for me, but seems people can't leave without 1440p or 4k, these days....). Is, according to reviews, more accurate in color calibration (before and after calibrating by hardware) than the Huion's and XP-PEN's most recent offerings. Still, a XP-Pen 22E seems can get a somewhat fine calibration point if calibrated by hardware (just quite more off than the cintiq). All that said, this is (the cintiq 22 and cintiq 16, as is same type of panel)  a 96% sRGB. Does not cover a 90% Adobe RGB or the like, but... for a bunch of workflows, it'd do. And the panel beats clearly the others in several ways: black point, contrast ratio once calibrated, the  calibration point, etc. It includes the very best pen for wacom, not a toned down one.  But is 1200 $, while I believe the newest thing around, having some more modern features, the Huion Kamvas Pro 22 (2019) (yeah, freaking long name, but so you don't get confused with earlier versions) is selling for 900$. So.... is not so far of the alternative "top" budget, in pricing.

To be sincere, I believe I'd manage (but, while I'm not a pro in color like a photo labs expert, I'm kindda nerdier than the average Joe or Jane) to get a somewhat fine calibration point with the XP-PEN 22E, or however the call their latest version now, or the Huion. But the difference in tests that I have seen , in color calibration, make me think twice... or more.

Huion has released, also in this (2019) rank,  a 20" model. Have not seen a single review about it, though, and kind of I set 22 my minimum. But much better than a 16 by all means, so, for some pockets might be worth extra digging in reviews about it. I mean, I'd get a 20   before a 16, any day, even if the 20 had worse specs. (the huion's 2019 20 model is only  600 $, so, kind of the pricing of a bunch of 16 models, including the Cintiq, but much more affordable. But I haven't got a single reference of any review yet about how good or bad is it.... )

Thing is, seems the 2019 line in Huion Kamvas pro is having battery-free pens in the 22 model at least, and that was often sth only present in the 16 models, till recently. That and other improvements (and many specs in superior levels to the Cintiqs, at least on paper.... ) are worth a look.

Oh, you just replied while I was doing a massive edit of my post (additions),....

Apple and their ports ...when will they understand that the more, the merrier....

Must be some way to convert that signal, even with some 3rd party thingie...

If anything, I'd trust the new cintiq cheapo line (or any cintiq) to have it ensured to work with any Mac....as they have always done.

Huion is out of the table as an option ?

That can seem very cheap, but I'd rather get a 20" at least. (just check reviews to ensure there's not any big surprise, sometimes happens). I've had even Cintiq pro line small pen-display tablets, and you...don't want small, not even with the best specs. The below is 600$. xe.com tells me that's now 535 euros.

https://www.huiontablet.com/all-products/pen-tablet-monitor/kamvas-pro-20-2019.html

Or...wait... if is only for photo retouch, you'r fine with a 16, or even wacom intuos small classic tablet or a Deco 03 from XP.

I'm all the time thinking in illustration, comic or digital painting.

No really:

The smallest is 11,6" and 350€, the 13" is no longer available, the Pro16 not available right now and goes up to 425€, Pro 20 and Pro22 no longer available, Pro20(2019) 550€. 16" is good for me.

Oki.

If u get it, I'd be interested to know how the color calibration tests go... If you would be in the mood to share it, that is.

The 16 cintiq (non pro) I believe is 650$. Dunno about the port issue of the iMac.

As the XP-Pens are on sale I´m close to get the Artist16Pro. But as I´m on an iMac only it has no HDMI-port.

So my guess a Mini Displayport to HDMI adapter won´t  do it. The friendly Chat Bot from their site just say HDMI-to-USB adaptor - didn´t link to any brand. There are so many variations like 30Hz TypeC or 60Hz. I´m fairly lost. Anyone here uses XP-Pen Displays on iMac probably?

I do not know what is the problem. Mini-DVI>HDMI works just fine in my MBP, of course also USB need to be plugged.

XP-Pen 22 was 350 € at Amazon Prime sales, but it is now higher again..

Are you completely sure you need a display tablet ?

I use a Wacom Intuos Pro XL (classic pen-tablet, costed 800 euros, and I have my doubts I wouldn't be better with a Deco 03 (100 USD)),  I'm a very seasoned illustrator and graphic designer and game artist, and I know I definitely don't need a display-tablet. It is gorgeous, is kind of faster (depending on how used you are to the other way, tho) and all, but one does not need it. And kind of I tend to recommend the pen-tablet, classic solution, as that skill must be learned, in case at some point, whether at a job they wont give you a pen-display (happens in a bunch of places), or if a hobby,  just at home the cintiq or cintiq-like breaks , and you can't afford to replace it. Is kindda 4 to 5 times more sustainable. With that skill, one can opt for pen-tablet or display-tablets later on... U probably have all skills in the classic tablets, tho. Is just a general thought.

iMac has no HDMI port as a MBP has.

Does your iMac have Thunderbolt 2 or Thunderbolt 3 ports? Thunderbolt is fully compatible with Mini DisplayPort peripherals so you should be able to use something like this AmazonBasics Mini DisplayPort Thunderbolt to HDMI Adapter + an HDMI cable.

I have a dirt cheap "no name" brand adaptor like that one that I sometimes use to connect my 2012 iMac with Thunderbolt 2 posts to an HDMI TV. Works fine.

Pretty sure: No.

My iMac is from 2011 when Apple implemented the first generation of Thunderbolt ports into MBP and iMac. Pretty much everything seems" better" with 2012 Macs (Metal-compability, TB2, e.g.).

According to MacTracker, every 2011 iMac has either a mini-displayport or 1 or 2 Thunderbolt 1 ports. I'm not sure what the maximum resolution supported by those ports might be, so I don't know if a mini-displayport to HDMI adaptor would work.

In fact, it seems unlikely that the onboard GPU of an iMac that old would support more than a very small tablet, regardless of the maker.

Here ya go:

So I am guessing that is an "iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011)" in Apple's nomenclature, with the upgrade 2GB Radeon HD 6970M GPU, right?

If so, MacTracker says it supports a maximum external display resolution of 2560 x 1600 px, as does EveryMac. So no guarantees, but it should drive a display tablet of that resolution or less via a cheap mini-displayport to HDMI adaptor.

Their support answered: The say a Thunderbolt-to-HDMI-adaptor is included and send this picture saying something different:

Looks more like a Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adaptor.

I´m discouraged. Seems I´m sticked to my Wacom drawing tablet.

Cheers

Sometimes the support person, or whoever replying might just grab the wrong image... I'd dig that matter well. IE, seeing unboxings in Youtube, of the exact model. But yeah, would be quite a risk, if support is not providing you with the right pic....

Geez. In a PC one would just change the card... (though even the cheap ones tend to come with DVI and HDMI ports, and there's a ton of super cheap adapters of every flavor.... ).

Thanks for the reminder. At least it´s just the age of my iMac. The newer ones have HDMI or Thunderbolt 3 (USB‑C) which might work - with adaptors of course. The secluded world of Apple is driving me nuts. The DVD drive died and don´t think any cheap third party external DVD-drive can work as a replacement; Don't count your chickens before they are hatched. If the translation makes any sense to you.

It is. But like I said, Thunderbolt is fully compatible with with Mini DisplayPort, so you just plug it into your iMac, an HDMI cable into it, & the other end of the cable into the HDMI display device.

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderbolt_(interface)

Quote

Thunderbolt 1 and 2 use the same connector as Mini DisplayPort(MDP), whereas Thunderbolt 3 re-uses the USB-C connector from USB. {...} Thunderbolt combines PCI Express (PCIe) and DisplayPort (DP) into two serial signals, and additionally provides DC power, all in one cable.
