Hiding parts of an image and shape

I want to hide this square behind the fingers of the praying hand but remain on top of the back of the hand. How would I go about doing this?

You could rasterize the rectangle, switch to the Pixel Persona, & use the Erase Brush on the part obscuring the fingers.

Duplicate the image layer, move it to the top of the layer stack and crop it to leave only the fingers overlapping the square.

Duplicate the image layer, select the hand part (refine selection for finetuning), invert the selection and delete/remove (so only the hand part is visible and the rest is transparent). Then move that layer on top to cover the rectangle layer.

Your result will be then somehow look like this, though hopefully with a finer made selection than that q'n'dirty one made here.

Yes a screenshot of the top layer then which is demonstrating/showing hand selection. Usually you remove the selection then afterwards (Cmd-D/Ctrl-D) and you are done.

How about a vector mask on the shape (or hands, but that requires a second image layer).... totally non-destructive and flexible.
