"printing out" (raw/doc-size, dpi,real size,retina.... wysyig...)

Recommended Posts

I´m missing a little bit the wysiwg-factor (not in AP, more in my understandment)...

I have some supposition how digital to analog works, but i´m not shure. So please correct me, if needed.

I have lots of "material" from different sources ... in final i want just photo-prints in 10x15 cm ( = 2:3) or bigger, but same ratio.

1.

It does not matter how "big" the base-file is: If the RATIO fits, the rest will fit as wide as enough pixel-information are inside.

If i have a 800 dpi "base" there will be a lot of information, if i have just "72" dpi, there will be less information.

I can not "blow up" 72 dpi to 300dpi (the missing pixels must be "riddled") and "compress" 300 to 72 - what will happen with the "too much" pixels, where are the new edges...

I understand that booth processing will creates artifacts. But i cannot understand, that the dynamic-on-the-fly-algorithms (cmd+1,2,3,4... ) looks mostly quieten better, than the dedicated "brothers" withs its dedicated algorithm? Why? What happens here and there?

2.

I have lot of photos from different sources.

A) very old mobile = 72dpi, but about 40x27 cm (= more less 3/2)

B) also very old mobile, also in 72dpi, also very "big", but other ratio (more 4:3) like 4634 cm

C) more dedicated apparatus with more DPI photos which are "smaller" (not this half-square-meter) BUT looks better...

It does not matter what "the real size"  (in centimeter) is. In the opposite: as higher the (centimeter) size, as more info-less a camera/photo is.

However, thats not a "which camera should i be" question - the question is leading into the main-question.

3.

I have different sources in different formats (in every meaning: size, dpi, ratio...)

The final Question:

If i want to create a photo-album (from my local drugstore) what  supposition is right and what not?

>>>>>>>

Its a very complex and confusing question/theme - i guess i have a little bit of "base-knowing" and "rigt consumptions", but maybe also some traps in my brain???

I guess this kind of "question" is the best way to demark all my lecks.

Thank you!

Hi Polygonius, we have a couple of videos on our YouTube channel that explain DPI and image resizing within Affinity Photo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyWgvqdtQaE & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HFcJupJkWo

Regarding CMD+1,2,3,4. CMD+1 will zoom to 100% mapping the document’s pixels to screen pixels. CMD+2 will zoom 200% and so on. More information here: https://affinity.help/photo/English.lproj/index.html?page=/GetStarted/zoom.html?title=Zooming or https://affinity.help/photo/de.lproj/index.html?page=/GetStarted/zoom.html?title=Zooming

We also have a video showing how to make Photo Collages in Affinity Photo ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKq0x_irguw ). This explains the different ways of adding and resizing images within a new document. You will also notice the image's DPI updating in the Context Toolbar to show the current DPI of the image you’re manipulating.

Thanks, but i´m not really sure, that i understand all - in fact, this videos confuses more than explain my quetion.

1.

If i change dpi without resampling - nothing happens. So why should i do this?

2.

If i change with resample the result will not become better, but the MB-size increases drastically. So why should i do this?

3.

My main question: If "printing" with a drugstore-foto-printer does it matter in any kind or do i have to look just for the correct ratio and the lineal cm/inch is complete irrelevant?

4.

Is there any quality-difference with higher resample (except the artifacts by resampling itself)???

1. You would normally uncheck resample when adjusting an image’s DPI to change the dimensions of an image when printing

2. This is all explained here: https://affinity.help/photo/English.lproj/index.html?page=/SizeTransform/imageSize.html?title=Changing image size

3. The drugstore-foto-printer will normally specify the ideal DPI and size of the image to send them.

4. Each resampling method has its advantages and disadvantages. More information can be found in the above link.
