Affinity Designer convert a raster image into a vector one?

Recommended Posts

Illustrator has a tool called Live Trace that can convert a raster image into a vector one.  Is there a similar option for Affinity Designer?

Wonder if there is a way to accomplish this or if this a possible upcoming feature?

Affinity Designer 1.5.1.43

Windows 10 Pro, i7, 32gb RAM, MSI GTX 970

Using it for Board game design/enhancements, icon designs for software development, design of items to be cut on laser cutters.

Hi TurboCooler,

Affinity Designer doesn't have an auto trace feature yet, it's something that our developers want to include in a future update. It's also one of the main feature requests we receive for Designer in the feature requested section. It will depend on the image, but have you tried placing the image on the canvas and then on a new layer using the Pen Tool to manually do the line work?

The auto-trace feature in Inkscape (free and open source) works quite well, but since Affinity Designer doesn’t currently have a ‘Simplify’ feature you may need to spend some time removing extra nodes manually.

It's very sad news this. I purchased few day s ago Photo and Designer.
Now for such thing, I have to reinstal Inkscape in order to get this done.
It's apity that such package hs not yet implmented such useful feature.

In fairness there are free trial versions for both apps available, so you could have known this before you parted with your money.

Yep, although I took this feature for granted, being Designer considered the competitor of AI.

I note that that these requests are more than two old and yet there is still no conversion tool in Aff Designer. When can we look forward to its definite inclusion?

You can look forward to it now..

when it will arrive is another matter :)

Slightly more seriously, back when there was a published road map for features, I don't think it was listed. Right now I'd say it's more of an "if" rather than "when".

Are they ignoring this feature, when it's requested by more sides? No, seriously. I really need it. I was constrained to re-install inkscape to do it.

Since ADesigner hasn't a build-in tracing tool and probably never will have, one has to take some third party tool for tracing here, like for example:

Some desktop app tools

Some online tracing tools:

☛ Affinity Designer 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Photo 1.10.8 ◆ Affinity Publisher 1.10.8 ◆ OSX El Capitan
☛ Affinity V2.3 apps ◆ MacOS Sonoma 14.2 ◆ iPad OS 17.2

It’s kind of like the feeling of trying to go to Linux after being dissatisfied with Windows, only to realize that when they boot the Linux up, they realize that it doesn’t detect the internal card to connect to the internet, so they have no internet access...
