Sub forums or mandatory tags on new posts for Designer and Photo

  1. 1. Should there be Sub forums or mandatory tags on new posts for Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo

    • Yes, it would make the forum clearer
    • No, its fine as it is.
    • Alternatively, use a mandatory tag to indicate Designer or Photo when making a new post?
    • Don't care Santa's coming :-)

Hi all, I don't know about everyone else but I sometimes get confused with posts that don't mention whether its Affinity Designer or Affinity Photo. I really think there should be sub forums under Questions for Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo or make a tag or label that indicates which of the programs is being discussed, as it is I think its a bit of a mess.

Another option would be to replace the bullet point with the appropriate programs logo or at least change the colour of the bullet so that posts with pink bullet points are for Affinity Photo?

what do you all think?

Got an idea yourself?

There have been several topics suggesting the desirability of creating separate forums for the two apps ever since Affinity Photo for the Mac was first released. After the Windows versions were released there were similar ones about separate forums for the Mac & Windows versions as well. There also have been suggestions made about mandatory tags as an alternative.

The problems with these suggestions have also been discussed at length. Among them:

1. As it is, new (& sometimes not so new) users post to the wrong forum for one reason or another. This is likely to occur more frequently if there are more subforums to choose from.

2. Many questions & comments are about things that apply equally well to both apps, & to both platforms. Some are about which app to get, what advantages there might be for using both apps, etc. It has been suggested that because of this there should be yet another subforum for general questions.

3. Some believe that mandatory tags are not a good idea for commercial product support forums since they could discourage new users or potential buyers from starting topics if they are not familiar enough with the products to know what tag(s) to use.

4. It is not clear if the software running these forums has the capability of implementing mandatory tags.

5. It is not clear what should be done about existing topics. Adding tags or moving them all into subforums would be labor-intensive & require judgement calls.

From what I can tell, there is no consensus about how these problems could be eliminated or minimized.

Add to that an evolving FAQ/HowTo about the most common and always repetitive "how do I do this or that" questions here!

Google English translation: "One idea among many others would be to create a tree"

This would mean creating 12 (or possibly 15 if you include Resolved bug sub-forums), none of which has an exact counterpart in the existing forum hierarchy. What would you suggest should be done about the existing ones? What about reporting bugs that exist in the code base shared by all of the apps, or just in all of the Mac or Windows versions?

I am assuming that the "Une rubrique: -xxx" sub-forums are intended for things that do not specifically or clearly fit into the other application sub-forums. If so, I think they will be the most frequently chosen ones for new topics, even when one of the others might be more appropriate. One reason for this is it is often not obvious until some discussion has occurred if something is a bug, a misunderstanding about how something works, just a general comment, or what. Another is that I believe a lot of users won't be any more willing to navigate through a complex sub-forum hierarchy than they are for the simpler one we have now & will just pick a sub-forum more or less randomly & hope for the best.

Basically, I think the more complex the forum hierarchy becomes, the less likely it is that anything will improve.

Just to clarify, my "No, its fine as it is" vote does not actually mean I think things are fine as they are, just that I do not think there is any practical way to make them better.
