Exporting PNG loses transparency

Recommended Posts

Take any file and cut a piece out so you have a transparency

Export it as a PNG

Load it back into AP

The transparency is gone

(If you load a PNG file and create a transparent area and SAVE it, the transparency is preserved)

I tried a control runup and no changes

Export settings and PNG file attached

I don't have the beta. So maybe it is an issue with the beta, but the PNG that you uploaded has transparency. It loads in the retail version with transparency and everything else I have.

Yes, the PNG that Rick uploaded has transparency, but if I export it to PNG-24 and then load the exported version I get the result described in the OP.

I have to correct my statement, see above
During the export, I noticed that an ICC profile is activated,
deactivate the ICC profile, then works the PNG export with 24 bit and transparent background

That isn't doing it here. I export from the menu and deselected the profile and I still get a white background

The wreath I uploaded was transparent for testing the export

THis works correctly in the release version

Thanks to everyone for checking and testing this

When creating a document, you need to check this box. It helped me.

Thanks for the pointer but i almost always do that with new documents (or just for get, cuss a lot and remove the white background)

However I am usually bringing in assorted graphics to work on. That is the case here. I brought in the wreath, removed the background and exported it and the transparency is lost during export even though they are the same settings I have always used for PNG files. If the loaded file is a PNG to start with then just saving the file WILL preserve the transparency, it is only the export that is apparently broken. I have loaded several other graphics and just taken a bite out of the middle and the export failure is the same

Exporting as a GIF has the same issue

Thanks for the reply

That wasn't the procedure described.

But in any case, like I wrote, it must be an issue with the beta because I cannot get it to fail when rexporting in the retail version, placing or reopening the export(s).

Just take any old jpg, use the marquis tol to delete a section so it shows a transparent background then export it

Then load it

In the release version you will see the transparency, in the beta it is white

I specifically used a  png with a transparent background for testing. That will save over itself and maintain the transparency but will not export correctl

Of course I fully expect the entire Serif office to cancel Christmas and fix this ...

Assumption from the original post. The PNG that was posted was a JPG and was exported as a PNG and when brought back in there was no transparency. That to me is a simple reading of the OP.

You go on to say that using that same PNG that is in the opening post and exporting it as a transparent PNG and then reloading it results in a non-transparent PNG.

I said that I did load the PNG from the opening post, exported and brought it back in (using every option that preserves transparency, btw) and there was still transparency when using the retail version. I then said it must be an issue with the beta. Call that a confirmation of sorts and without the beta certainly it is the only confirmation that I can do.

Clear? Or clear as mud?

Yes! Clear that is what I am reporting. A bug in the beta. DOn't mind my reexplaining things.. I want to make sure the developers know exactly what is going on with it

Thanks for the response

Fact is that the normal PNG export does not work as it should.

I'm getting the same results. Beta 1.6.3.96 loads transparent png files correctly but fills the transparency with white when exporting to png format.

Did you check the matte setting in the PNG export as shown by @toltec in this post? If there is no red slash through the white color swatch he shows circled in his second screenshot, it means the PNG will be exported with a matte colored background instead of a transparent one.
