Straight lines can be drawn with the Pen Tool. Select the last icon in the Mode: section of the context toolbar. Change thickness using the Stroke context toolbar item or the Stroke Studio panel (Affinity Designer only).

No worries.....just use the pen tool.....create 1 point.... hold shift and then click on another point...you will see it go yellow and because you are holding shift it will be straight  Your pencil tool should only be used for roughing in lines........it is never a good idea to use it for straight lines. I came from traditional art...saw the pencil tool and thought that was may answer too......took me months to realize digital does not work the way I think it should

Holding down the Shift key will constrain the angle to a multiple of 45 degrees. If you only want the line to be straight, simply click at the endpoint without dragging; alternatively, use Line Mode as @R C-R has suggested.

Thank you for all the responses.

I am used to DrawPlus 7.  The only reason why I downloaded the Affinity trial was to see how easy or otherwise it is to drive.

I have decided it's otherwise.  Despite it being much more versatile I find the interface user-hostile.

DrawPlus has been running well on Windows 10 until a day or two ago.  Then, presumably after yet another update, I discovered a glitch when re-sizing its window.  It wouldn't follow the mouse smoothly, but jumped to it after it had moved a few centimetres.  It may get better after another of Microsoft's interventions, but if not I can still use it on my XP machine.
