Backup of projects in affinity ipad

Recommended Posts

  • 4 months later...

There are two options given here which don’t work for me.

Documents > export doesn’t give me an option to save to cloud.

The menu icon only has an item to save not ‘save to cloud’

How do I move my projects to the cloud so I can edit on the Mac?

ive a suspicion that this problem might just be with a beta release. I downloaded the version from the App Store and all it ok

In General Preferences set Save Location to cloud instead of iPad. When you 'Save' the file will be saved to Cloud instead of local.

Thanks for that. I think the problem was with a beta release. The only way I could find to install the version released via the App Store was by stopping testing using TestFlight so now I’m not sure how to give feedback. Anyway I’ve mamaged to do what I wanted to do and got them all up on the cloud.

So there's no way to set this to save to Dropbox, correct?

iPad Pro 12.9 M1/Mac Mini M1, in that order

Correct, perhaps in a future version of both apps as both would need changes to make that work reliably I feel.

Edit: After playing with the new pages app that came out yesterday which now works well with Dropbox I’ve changed my mind, it should be possible in AP in a new version as per how the Apple apps work now.

But is there still no way to do a batch save (to icloud) and close (to free up app memory)?

The convoluted interfaces for saving/exporting/closing on the ipad are insane. If you have mutliple projects day in and day out that you need to save, Affinity's lack of a grown-up method for dealing with projects is this app's worst failing, imho. Can't believe they haven't worked out user-friendly workflow solutions for this incredibly basic task.

Files are strictly not 'saved' until you save them using the Save menu option. Once you do this (and I suggest this is the first thing you should do after creating a new file), you can save to Cloud or any location. Then delete the the file from the project screen (it is just a 'sandboxed' version, and use Open from Cloud to reopen the previously 'Saved' new file. Now all edits will be saved back to Cloud/chosen file location. The Project screen file icon will also now be linked to the Cloud/chosen file location. This negates the need to batch save Projects. Just delete from Project screen when finished. The 'saved' file will already be in Cloud/chosen location. It would be nice though to have a batch 'delete' for Project screen. :)

File management is still somewhat  not very helpful and actually  counter-intuitive sometimes (like having ‘close’ instead of ‘delete’) .. it definitely needs work..

I have a lot of projects I need to backup right now and I’m here learning all those documents weren’t really saved but just there in the app’s sandbox ? 😨

Files App would have been much handy here for some file management batch operations but alas, it can’t access the sandbox .. (was hoping to find the ‘unsaved’ files in there)

Affinity must realize more and more people would use these apps professionally ( they built them to be that capable ) so these half thought-out file management solutions can’t cut it anymore..

Imagine the horror of having to manually save all the projects I have , recreating the folder structure inside of Files before finally being able to make my backup, I have quite a lot of projects 😨

The current solution is NOT very helpful..

This guy describes what it’s like to work with files created by affinity apps right now,

couldn’t have explained it better..

though positive-toned , reveals how the current system is just not reasonable..

It really needs work,

Help us 😩

Just to add, there is also an option to Save a Copy within the Document menu. This option allows you to navigate to ANY location accessible via files (clouds, networked drives, other local folders, USB etc). If you then use Open from Cloud and access this saved 'copy', you can use the Document/Save menu to save edits directly back to the files folder location.  This way, you can safely delete projects in Affinity's Project screen.

You have my empathy.

Thankfully I noticed this UX problem fairly early on, but it was still upsetting to have to move around 50 files and restructure their organization. Now I have good habits around saving my files before "closing" them out of the sandbox and just straight up not using the "project" feature which is effectively useless.

Wish we could use AD's file viewer not as a sandbox, but as a true file viewer. After all, AD does use a file viewer of sorts for placing images and exporting...

Just click on the small menu icon on the bottom right of each thumbnail in the Welcome Screen and select Save A Copy.

The hamburger menu is Save. The Save a Copy option only appears in the Workscreen Document menu.

It’s ok provided you are happy to use the Default storage location. The Project save creates an .afdesign file and then using save in workscreen document menu or welcome screen hamburger menu will both update the .afdesign file.

Really?! That reply is from 2017 - these changes were not implemented at the time if i remember correctly!

Wow, didn’t realise thread was that old (didn’t look at date), you were certainly correct at time of posting 😊. There still appears to be some confusion among new users regarding work residing in sandbox and getting work out of sandbox using welcome screen project menu. Hence the clarification.
