Kiarian
I'm trying to figure out the best way you can generate a fabric using Affinity Photo. I know you can use the noise filters to generate random static, but how would I combine this with a set pattern you would get in a fabric like cotton? I'm trying to design a retro sports kit, but I don't want a perfectly flat white background for it to sit against. I've been using Google Images to try and get a decent cotton texture, but I would rather create one from scratch.
Staff DWright Posted November 9, 2017 Staff Share Posted November 9, 2017 Hi Kiarian, You can do this using a a transparent texture image either as a overlay or as a bitmap fill, I personally like the bitmap fill as you can alter a repeat option of the bitmap image to introduce more randomness to the applied texture Kiarian
R C-R
As for creating the texture from scratch, one way might be to take a few closeup photos of a piece of a plain white cotton cloth & create a bitmap from that. A transparent texture image? As in something you would get from a Google Images search, or can you create this from scratch in Affinity Photo? Photoshop has the sketch>half tone filters, with noise and blur to get a similar effect. Can I do the same thing in Affinity Photo?
R C-R
I think he means adjusting the layer opacity of the image and/or using the Overlay option to combine it with the other layer(s). Kiarian
I'm lost - what does 'repeat option of the bitmap image' mean? And what's a 'bitmap fill'?. Affinity Photo has only the Flood Fill tool.
R C-R
Affinity Photo has a Gradient tool. When you select it, the Context toolbar has several options, including context (fill or stroke) & Type. One of the Type options is "Bitmap." Select that & you can specify a previously saved image file (jpg, tif, etc.). Use it on a shape, such as a rectangle that covers the canvas, & you get Extend options & control handles that allow you to fill the rectangle with a repeating pattern. Use the Mirror or Wrap extend option for this. stokerg and Kiarian 2 Quote All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V2.4.1 Mac apps; 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7 Affinity Photo 1.10.8; Affinity Designer 1.108; & all 3 V2 apps for iPad; 6th Generation iPad 32 GB; Apple Pencil; iPadOS 15.
