In separate mode on external display context toolbar is missing

Recommended Posts

Hi Affinity-Team,

I have a laptop which I use on separate displays and as stand alone equal times. I always have the issue that the context toolbar is disappearing on either one of the different screens. Even if I try to turn it off and on again, it stays disappeared. I assume this might be larger issue, but I would love to have all the windows, toolbars, etc. to be on the exact same place where I left them, last time I have been on the specific display.

When I connect to different monitors / beamers the operation system also remembers my display resolution for the different screens. Maybe this is a possibility for Affinity Designer / Photo to adopt.

Kind Regards

Tim

Here's my work-around for when the context toolbar disappears:

"View" > "Customize Toolbars..."

In the bottom left corner, choose View: "Icon and Text" and click "Done."

The context toolbar appears.

Switch the toolbar back to "Icon Only"

Hopefully that works for you too.

Eric

Hey Tim,

This does seem to happen from time to time, with others it can be more consistent. We should really look into this a bit more as I've recently had this with another user.

The fix that Eric mentioned is what I've done previously.

I had a similar problem too...

My system has multiple monitors, which get rearranged from time times to times. The problem is that "Context Toolbar" get displayed on a screen that no longer exist, and there are no way to move is back to one of the remaining screen. I tried to re-arrange screens and desktops, but it dos not work. I also tried reseting the studio but it has no effect on the "Context Toolbar". Customizing the toolbar does bring the dialog box but NOT the toolbar; you can actually see that dialog bar closes tower a non existing desktop/screen area when you press done.

Short or creating a new user profile on my mac, I'm stock here...

Ho yea, and I tied to locate my "user preferences" in the mac "Library" folder, so that I delete it and reset it this way, but I can't find it either... White I'm at it, it would be nice to be able to "save" studio preferences to different setups. I'm thinking of a laptop that constantly gets disconnected from a second/third monitor.

Still have this issue on a new system, but this time, it is triggered by going full screen and then switching monitor. Sometimes it's just fine, but sometimes, the toolbar just goes bye-bye. I can actually see where it is if I go View > Customize Toolbar, (Which brings the dialog box) but the Toolbar itself stays hidden like a ghost in the middle of one of my displays.

It's possible to get it back by using the [^ control] Open on a Mac, but it's kind of drag to re-arrange the studio all the time.

Until that gets fixed, I'm wondering if anyone knows in which file the studio is saved in the user's Library. I would really like to be able to arrange my studio once, and make a backup copy of just that file, so that I can copy it back to the Library when the toolbar disappears again. I found a bunch of other preferences files that I could back up or transfer from one computer to another, but this one still eludes me.

Thanks!

Found it! For those who have this issue, here's a workaround until it gets fixed, or Affinity implement a save studio function.

Backup your studio configuration (MAC)

The following allows you to keep a safe copy of your studio configuration, including the Toolbar and other preferences (I did not know which ones at this point)

  1. Quit Affinity Designer
  2. From the finder top drop-down menu, select GO and press [option] — [shift] or [^control] on some systems. A new item called Library should appear in the menu. Click it.
  3. Navigate to this location : /Users/YourUserNameHere/Library/Containers/com.seriflabs.affinitydesigner.beta/Data/Library/Preferences
  4. Copy the file com.seriflabs.affinitydesigner to a safe location of your choice. I recommend a cloud base storage, so you can get it back on a new/different system as well
  5. Go back to work with peace of mind, your Studio configuration is now safe.

If the studio go astray, or the toolbar plays hide and seek again

  1. Quit Affinity Designer
  2. Copy back com.seriflabs.affinitydesigner to its original location — Replace the existing files

Note that the studio will come back the exact same way you had it at the time you copied the file for the first time. Changes you made between the two procedures will be lost. Forever. I have not tested it yet, but I'm sure that some other preference settings will be affected as well, I just don't know to what extend.

Tricks:

  1. You can make multiple Studio arrangements and save them independently. Very useful on a laptop that uses an external monitor that is not always connected.
  2. If you're comfortable with MacOS Automator, you can even create series of app/scripts to save or restore your Studio configuration(s) automatically.

Yes PLEASE! Erics fix doesn't work for me. This Bug is super annoying. I have to position all Studio-Items every time the bug occurs. Happens regularly in Designer and Photo. Still in 1.6.1
