Designer... how to make a simple straight line?

Recommended Posts

Guys,

I know this might sounds simple... but I only recently started with Designer, and can't find the Straight Line tool?
How would I create a straight line?
(I did manage to create a straight line with the 'Rectangle Tool'... but of course this isn't the proper way)

Hi Prodigy,

Select the Pen Tool, click once (don't drag or you will end up drawing a curve) on canvas where you want your start point, click again where you want you end point.

If want to restrict the Pen Tool to lines only, you can change the Mode in the context toolbar to Line Mode - which will draw a line with just a single segment. Polygon Mode lets you draw lines with multiple segments.

Hi Prodigy,

Welcome to the forums :)

There is a Line mode for the Pen Tool it is selectable from the context tool bar (see attached)

Ah... great, thanks!
(Line mode works perfectly for this)

But how do I keep a horizontal line under control?
I has to be perfectly horizontal, not being of at the end of the line.
(the left beginning starting lower than the right end of the line, if you know what I mean)

Hi Prodigy,

If you hold shift once you have placed the first node of your line it should constrain allowing you to draw horizontal and vertical :)

Thanks

To make certain a simple line remains perfectly horizontal, you need to press yet another key??? I went to my CorelDRAW, drew a perfect horizontal line without a need to touch anything else. Seriously?

You can also use the snapping options for this if you find the extra effort of holding down the Shift key too much to bear. ;)

So, does your drawing ability only extend to drawing straight lines ?  Sounds like my drawing ability ;)

What happens in Corel Draw if you don't want it to be perfectly horizontal, do you have to press another key? Anyway, if you set snap to grid, lines will always be straight and I'm assuming that if you are drawing lots of straight lines, you want some sort of precision ?

Or just enable this button in the Context menu bar:

I realize some might consider it a huge amount of effort to click that button, but it is 'sticky' so you only have to do it once per session. You can take a short break afterwards if needed to get enough energy to continue. xD

Quite right.

Sorry for the delay in responding, I tried it and then had to take a short break, as advised.

Oh heavens, I just realized I will have to click it off now. :(

I did not mention that. It is two bears too many for me to bear thinking about.

I don't even like thinking about the whole 'right to bear arms' thing -- why would anyone want to have bear arms, anyway? Human arms are much better suited to design work.

The question is, do bears have arms ?

I thought they had four legs.

Haven't you ever worn a short-sleeved shirt or a T-shirt??

Hind legs ?  Oh deer !

Anyway, that can't be right. If they have two hind legs, what about the other fore? Bears don't have that many legs.

Should we try to keep this thread going, or would it be better just to let it stagnate?

Hi,

Another question related to drawing lines, is it possible to have a line begin/end with a "Arrow Head" ? I need to do complex diagram and need to show the flow between boxes.

Cheers

Dave

You can use the shape tools which have an arrow shape among them, or just make your own custom ones. - Example of some in SVG made arrows here ...

arrows_svg.jpg.952dc26d8092d6c68473d3af771f1719.jpg

... which for example could be placed into an assets panel category for reuse.

Hi and thanks for the reply but I'm really not sure what I'm supposed to do with the "arrows_svg.afdesign" file.

I tried the existing "Arrow" Shape, but its not really much help as I need a multi-segment line with the ability to add an Arrow Head to the First and Last Segments.....

Then you have to draw your multi-segment line and afterwards place manually arrow heads on both ends.
