toltec
"1. How do I move the background picture (and re-position it) cos seems like I can't. I can only position the rectangles." Click on Lock Children (context menu) and the image will move, not the rectangles and as dutchshader says, unlock the layer first. "2. How to add shadows to these rectangles?" Click on Layer Effects (the little fx on the Layers panel) and choose Outer shadow. Quote Windows PCs. Photo and Designer, latest non-beta versions. How do I move the background picture (and re-position it) cos seems like I can't. I can only position the rectangles. 2. How to add shadows to these rectangles? Thank you so much again. @ali83 1. In your screenshot the background layer (in the layers panel) is locked. Unlock it then you will be able to move it with the Move tool. 2. When the rectangles are cut out and placed on panels which are then placed on the wall, the shadow effect is created by the light in the room. So you don't actually create the shadows in your artwork. In fact it would look wrong if you created the shadows one way but the light in the room was coming from another direction. You could end up with 2 conflicting shadows on each panel which would look weird. But if you really want to do it... when you have finished adjusting everything, just Rasterise your picture layer and add an Outer Shadow effect to the Layer. Not around for the rest of the day but hopefully you should be OK now. Quote To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. jplautre
@carl123 Hello ! As a newbie, I tried to repeat your example but how do you "use the Group as a clipping mask on the image layer" ? I looked at some clipping masks examples but could not translate them ! Thx for help.
Staff MEB Posted October 21, 2017 Staff Share Posted October 21, 2017 Hi jplautre, Welcome to Affinity Forums Drag the group in the Layers panel over the thumbnail of the image - you should see a small vertical blue line on the right of the thumbnail - then release the mouse. The group will then be used as a vector mask showing the image just inside the rectangles area. John Rostron
I have re-read @R C-R's definition and, after close scrutiny, I have to say that my accusations of ambiguity are unfounded. I did have to read it several times though. All these comments about definitions remind me of Humpty-Dumpty's conversation with Alice: " When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less." "The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things." "The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master—that's all." That said, I am happy to accept this modern definition. It would also encompass pentaptychs with gaps in the image in-between, and those without. Which you would use would depend on the image.
