Affinity Photo Customer Beta (1.6.6 - Beta 6)

Recommended Posts

  • Staff

Status: Beta Release

Purpose: New features, fixes

Requirements: Purchased Affinity Photo

Mac App Store: Not Submitted

Download: Here

This is the sixth beta of a substantial change to our codebase and as much as we have tried to ensure the quality of the code, it should be considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity that may be adversely affected by the application failing. In addition it is definitely worth noting that files created in Affinity 1.6 may not open in 1.5 so always make a copy of your important documents before opening them in 1.6 to ensure you do not accidentally overwrite them and are unable to open them in your 1.5 version.

To use this beta, simply download the file from the link given above and double-click on the file to open the installer. Follow the instructions to install the beta version. The beta sits alongside the Mac App Store version and will not interfere with it.

Thanks,

Affinity Photo Team

Thanks for the video Depa. I thought you were using the Affinity Photo extension which does send the image back to Apple Photos (select the image in Apple Photos click the Edit button on the top right of the interface, then click the tree dots button (extensions) and select Edit in Affinity Photo).

Regarding the Image ▸ Edit With menu command in Apple Photos, i'm currently checking it.

The major lag that I'm experiencing with active selections is much better with the 1.6 series now than in the 1.5 series, i.e. it doesn't completely stall the entire system any more, but it's still quite significant. I suspect it might be related to drawing of the marching ants animation (OS X 10.9.5, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB, late 2008 aluminium unibody MacBook with external screen).

Finally being able to nudge points in the Curves dialog with the cursor keys really is a godsend, though unless I just haven't found the right combination of modifier keys, it's apparently still not possible to select and move multiple points at the same time or type in numeric values – that's still one of the major things I'm missing in Curves. Moreover, being able to move points in larger increments when a modifier like shift is pressed while nudging would also be very helpful.

One bug in the nudging feature: Pressing the right arrow key with a control point will make it jump to the very left of the curve widget instead of moving it right by a pixel as one would expect. Goes equally for Curves adjustment layers and blend curves in the layer blend settings.

And some nitpicky UI stuff: The baselines of the text in the controls at the bottom of the Adjustment Layer settings popup window (Curves, Levels, White Balance etc.) are all over the place and the cogwheel icon is not centered on the blend mode popup. The same goes for the top controls of the Layers panel, lots of different heights, slightly offset text baselines and text not being vertically centered in its container. And in Light UI mode, the background gradient in the curves widget is a tad strong, not sure if it is even needed at all. Just thought I'd mention it because I was happy to see that lots of these small UI things seem to have been cleaned up since the 1.5 release

This one is for Steve … :)

It’s nice to see the light UI develop! Well, here is a basic observation regarding the main framework of the light UI. I have noticed that some of the background greys have changed since the last iteration. But I still have a problem with the visual hierarchies, and I hope you will see this as well. I believe the background of the main toolbar in standard mode is too dark. Have a look at my illustration below. It should make clear that it would be beneficial to brighten the main toolbar background in standard mode, up to the point, where it conforms to the grey value of the main toolbar in full screen mode.

Furthermore, I would suggest that you care for the inactive state of Affinity Photo as well. It looks a bit heterogenous at the moment, compared to the standard macOS interface.

Hope that makes sense … :)

Cheers, Alex

Thanks A_B_C. Makes perfect sense. Thanks again for the suggestions. I'll see what I can do :-)

How about a slight change to zoom in/out?

Right now I can only set keyboard shortcuts. If you use a pen with two buttons, slide up/down with the upper button pressed (usually set to middle mouse button) for zooming while working feels a lot more natural than leaving your tool (especially a senile tool that forgets its state) to go to the zoom tool for natural scrubby zoom. Especially for paint work where keyboard shortcuts are too jumpy this would help.
