Crop Tool

Hi,

is it possible to make "Crop" tool in Photo to work as in Designer? Not on whole page/Artboard, but on object only?

The only way to crop is to "clip" the object by putting it in a shape.

Yes, that is the same result.

 

The crop tool in Photo only crops the whole document. So you have to work round it by "clipping". an object.

Why to work arround when in Designer works just fine? Why the same tool has different approach? Would "Crop" tool work third way in Publisher?

You have to bear in mind what the software is intended for.

 

Designer is a page based program. It would be common to place multiple objects on a page, so each needs individual sizing, cropping etc.

 

Photo is intended as a picture editor. You edit an individual picture, then export it to insert it somewhere else, like in a Page Layout Program or on a website. Photo is not a page layout program.

 

Publisher is definitely a page layout program, so yes, I would certainly expect a tool to crop pictures, like Designer.

Yes? I thought it is. 

Sometimes you put more photos on the page which need (individual) croping.

No, it isn't.

 

It is very good so you can use it quite well. But it lacks some features, like text columns, page bleed or cropping, as you know

Because it is not the same tool. Designer has an object based Vector Crop Tool, used to make what amounts to a rectangular mask that is applied to objects -- note that in the Layers panel it creates a mask layer for the selected object.

 

Photo's Crop Tool is more like Photoshop's crop tool -- it affects the size of the entire canvas.

It's just been elaborated. I think it can be more flexible if it works the same way like in Designer.

Then how would you crop the canvas in Photo, or use its rotate or straighten modes?

Not to mention crop ratios and non-destructive cropping.

Maybe, but if they put in every possible feature, just because one or two people want it, the program soon becomes very bloated. That slows it down and makes it less effective for everyone else.

Not saying you did, or would. But would a different type of crop tool benefit many in an image editing program ?  

 

It is so easy to clip an image. Do you need a dedicated page layout tool ?

What specifically do you mean by "everything"? Designer's Vector Crop Tool has no capability to rotate or straighten a photo, to set crop ratios, to save crop presets, or to upsize the canvas. It is a very limited, special purpose tool.

 

By contrast, Photo's Crop Tool has a much wider range of capabilities, & the developers have said that by popular request it is being reworked to act more like the one in Photoshop.

Rotation/Straightening can be done with modifier key while Crop tool is active, crop ratios should not be problem to implement...

??? Designer's Vector Crop Tool has no such capability. As I said in my first reply, in effect all it does is create a rectangular mask that is applied to objects, not to the canvas.
