Staff Chris B Posted September 27, 2017 Staff Share Posted September 27, 2017 Hey amyemiko, welcome to the Affinity Forums. You need to go to Document Setup and change your Document Units to Inches. R C-R
You can also do this by selecting the View (hand) Tool -- the context toolbar for this tool includes a popup "Units:" selector. It is often faster to use this than going into the File > Document Setup menu item. jer and charlesxix 1 1 Quote All 3 1.10.8, & all 3 V23.0 Mac apps; 2020 iMac 27"; 3.8GHz i7, Radeon Pro 5700, 32GB RAM; macOS 10.15.7 Affinity Photo 1.10.8; Affinity Designer 1.108; & all 3 V2 apps for iPad; 6th Generation iPad 32 GB; Apple Pencil; iPadOS 15.

Videomike
Very frustrating, Trying to get the rulers to be in inches. Everytime I open the program it reverts back to pixels. Seems like I have spent hours on this! I do not get a "UNITS" in the "hand" context drop down. Cant you just make a preference to open in inches. I have to my initial work in Photoshop, then once it is resized I can use Affinity Photo. I really can't keep working this way. "u can also do this by selecting the View (hand) Tool -- the context toolbar for this tool includes a popup "Units:" selector. I dont have "Go to "File" on Tool Bar, open dialog box to "Document Setup" then to "Units" and set to Inches." 'Document Setup' in the file menu. Maybe cause i am on a MAC? In fact, I don't even have a "Document Setup"! Unless you are referring to the "New Document" window which you can select to not appear at start-up? OK, I had inches, then I open a new photo and its back to pixels. Let me know what I am doing wrong, or please let me know when I can just click on the ruler (at a minimum) and switch over to inches. With a program this gpood, I would expect it tpo open in inches without always having to do 15 different keystrokes to get inches..... R C-R
@Videomike With the View (hand) tool selected, the Context Toolbar should look similar to this You did not say which app (Affinity Designer or Affinity Photo) you are using, so I included both, but for either one the Context Toolbar should have the word "Pan" on the left & the "Units:" popup that I have outlined in red. If you do not see the Context Toolbar, go to the View menu & put a checkmark next to the "Show Context Toolbar" item. 4 hours ago, Videomike said: In fact, I don't even have a "Document Setup"! Unless you are referring to the "New Document" window which you can select to not appear at start-up? The "Document Setup" File menu item is unique to Affinity Designer; you won't see it if you are using Affinity Photo. However, I do not know what you mean about being able to set the "New Document" window not to appear at startup. This window appears any time you select "New" from the File menu in either app -- it has nothing to do with what appears on the Welcome window if you had that set to appear at startup. When you save a file to the native .afphoto or .afdesign format, the document units are saved in the file, so the next time you open the file it should be set to the same units. If you need more help with this, please say which app you are using. Videomike
Thank you for your very quick reply. I was using an older version of Affinity Photo (AP). I (since my writing) have upgraded to "AP" version 1.6.6. This is no longer an issue, or problem. the units selector is conveniently located right on the top menu bar. Works beautifully now: I can easily change the rulers to any mode quickly. Sorry for my "Stressed " sounding Post. Love the Macro Download! I'll have to look if there is a repository of more of these (very cool!).... Starting to love this software.... CapnT
Still it would be nice to set a preference to whichever unit one works with the majority of their time. I personally rarely work with pixels. and have to always do this. I also never save in the native program but more universal formats so I can easily send and work with the images in many different programs and workflow situations. I love the program but these two inflexible features are daily pain in the ass switches. Just my two cents.
