Help with Layers and the Flood Fill Tool

I just got Affinity today, and I'm trying to transfer the skills I developed on Photoshop. I'm testing this by trying to color some art that I did, as I do often, and I've encountered a problem.

 

In order to do my drawings, I draw the lineart on paper, photograph it, and put it into Photoshop. Then I apply a Threshold Layer and extract black and white lineart. From there I use the Bucket tool on a new layer with Sample All Layers selected, so I can have my lineart and color separate.

 

However, it does not seem like Affinity has a way to fill a lined shape on another layer. It simply floods the entire canvas with color. Am I missing something? Thank you for your time.

A hell of a lot easier in Photo

 

Place a fill layer (Layer > New Fill Layer) on top. Pink is my favourite  

 

Change the blend mode to Screen. The layers are separate.

 

Or if you want something a bit more "multi-coloured" 

 

 

 

Go Filters > Colours > Erase White Paper. Select a brush and a colour. MAKE SURE Protect Alpha is ticked (on the brush Context toolbar) and paint. Only the black will colour. 

 

 

Rather than paint on the art, of If you want to use a vector shape (or shapes) with solid colour or a gradient, place it above and set the mode to Screen.

 

 

 

 

If you want to colour the background, add a fill layer below. If you do that, nest the colouring layers inside the line art layer and all will be fine. Otherwise the blend modes clash.

If you are not sure how to find a previous topic you started, or if it was accepted, one way to do that is to hover the pointer over the "Activity" tab at the top of the page & from the popup below it that appears, choose the "Content I started" option.

@R C-R: For what it's worth, my interpretation of the OP's question was the same as yours (i.e. how to flood-fill only the areas enclosed by lines, rather than the entire canvas).

That would be my guess, based on what @Valtria said in the first post about floods filling the entire canvas with color.

@R C-R Apologies about that. What happened is I posted it in the wrong section by mistake, couldn't delete it, and reposted it in the right section. I guess the first one got moved to the right section.

Perfect, it works now. I tried it earlier and the wand tool wouldn't work. Not sure why. Thank you so much for your help!

I find having to use the wand and then flood fill pretty time consuming if you've got a complicated file. Having the flood fill tool sample all layers would be MUCH better.

Also, with pixel persona in designer, or a flood fill type tool in 'draw' persona. Basically, I want to add colour between vector lines. The file is VERY big and complex so turning all the individual lines into closed shapes for filling using the standard colour tools is impractical.

Reading through your description, I'm not sure I follow, nor do I think this is what the OP was asking for, nor do I think it is easier than in photoshop.
