Cut only the edge of an elipse out of a rectangle

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

i'm new to Affinity Designer and i'm absolutly not able to find a solution for my problem.  I want to cut only the border of an elipse out of an rectangle.

The elipses should be cutted out like the circle in the middle but it does not work with the substract tool.

Thanks for your help

Welcome to the Serif Affinity Forums, Ole. :)

The 'Subtract' command only works with closed shapes, not open strokes/curves. If you select the curves and choose 'Expand Stroke' from the Layers menu to turn the selected objects into closed shapes, you will be able to subtract them in the same way as you subtracted the circle.

Olumin4tor, another way is to in node tool:

1. Make sure there is a node where you want the line to start and stop

2. Insert a node between the nodes you want to be ends

3. With that new node selected press the "Break curve" Action icon

4. Drag a selection around the node you had added (because it's actually 2 nodes on top of each other after the break being done)

5. Press delete

I think you're answering a different question, @Gear maker. You've described how to cut a piece out of an elliptical stroke, but the OP wanted to use elliptical strokes to punch out pieces of the rectangle (in the same way as a circle has been used to punch the hole that you see in the screenshot).
