EddieR
Hello everyone, I'm trying to decide whether or not to buy into the Affinity option over Photoshop and I have a concern I'm hoping someone can help me with. I'm wondering first of all if I can open RAW Files into Affinity and second I'm wondering how long after a manufacturer releases a new camera onto the market will Affinity supply the coding to enable people who buy that camera open the RAW Files created by it? Thanks in advance, Eddie.
Staff MEB Posted August 24, 2017 Staff Share Posted August 24, 2017 Hi EddieR, Welcome to Affinity Forums Yes, Affinity apps can open RAW files. Here's the supported cameras/RAW formats list. Regarding tyour second question, we use LibRaw library. As soon as an update is available we add support for the new additions/formats to our apps (so there's no fixed timeframe for this). I advise you to download the Affinity Photo trial from Affinity's website to see if it fulfils your requirements and also check the Official Affinity Photo Video Tutorials to help you get started with the program. Any questions you may have just post here in the forums. iiggoorr
Hi, first of all affinity photo is powerfully image editing software at price which is equal to few months of Adobe subscriptions. However in regards to raw development affinity isn't there yet, at least for me. The problem is histogram in raw isn't usable because it is different during and after development. This bug is well described in few topics on affinity forum, but it is still not solved. The second problem for mi is shadow lifting which is completely unusable because it gives some kind of muddy over saturated look without any details (in my case at least). Anyway download free trial and see for your self if it works for you.

I agree that the shadows/highlights functions in the develop persona are pretty bad but the photo persona has an excellent shadows/highlights filter. They should take that and put it into develop persona.

Because of that shadows hilights after development is not as effective in detail recovery as it should be before development
Scott Williams
I'm not sure. I have not noticed this to be the case. I will have to do a bit of experimenting when I get a chance. I find I get the best results by doing my raw conversion with highlight and shadow recovery in capture one first and then do my extra stuff in affinity photo. Affinity photo does have raw development capabilities at the moment but I get the feeling that there wasn't much effort put into develop persona. If raw development is primary what you need then affinity photo is not the best choice. Alexandru Cojocaru

Alexandru Cojocaru
I was getting really excited about Affinity Photo, until I tried to develop some RAW images... the shadow recovery gives very bad results. Edit: I did a search and I've seen a lot of people complaining about this. This should be the no1 problem to be fixed in my opinion. I know the team is aware of this and working on it and I hope it will be fixed in the 1.6 version. This is a big issue that is holding back many people switching from Adobe.
