freehand selection tool unusable

Recommended Posts

I have a problem with the freehand selection tool (lasso tool). When I have selected a certain area and release the mouse button, my cursor suddenly has the "hand" shape, instead of the "cross" shape. So I cannot proceed in adding (by pressing CTR) more areas to my selection. When I restart Affinity and press the freehand selection tool, the "cross" cursor is back. But after a few minutes the problem starts again. What I also found was that when, after releasing the mousebutton and losing the possibility of adding a selection (because the handtool popped up), I went back to the tool bar and pressed the selection button that contains five tools, one of which is the freehand selection tool. Subsequently I chose the rectangular marquee tool and all of a sudden the "hand" cursor was back. And I was able to add to my selection. When I tried to go back to the freehand selection tool, the "hand" popped up again and I couldn't add anything anymore. I hope I made a shamefull mistake. Otherwise this is a crucial bug. Could you please help me?

Hi Davidholland,

Welcome to Affinity Forums :)

I'm having trouble reproducing this here. Assuming you are not pressing the Space key accidentally, do you have any third party app/menu app running that may be interfering with the shortcuts? If so can you please disable it and check if the issue persist? If that's not the case you may also try to reset the app pressing and holding ⌃(ctrl) while launching the application then selecting Clear from the dialog that will open (note that you will lost you user settings/preferences when you reset the app).

I'm getting the same problem. I rest all my user settings, which enabled me to actually select the Freehand Selection Tool and use it, but after about 30 seconds, it lost the selection I was creating, and reverted to the Hand move tool. I've restarted several times, and keep getting the same problem.

I'm running Affinity Photo 1.5.2 on an iMac running system 10.11.6. Using a Wacom tablet.

I'm having the same issue. I cannot get rid of the hand (move) tool to use the freehand selection(lasso) tool.
The lasso tool shows it is selected but on the canvas I only get the hand tool.

All of the other selection marque tools are fine.

Seems a reset as suggested fixes this issue.

Dear Eyesight, my only solution is to press the spacebar. The tool will switch back from hand to lasso tool! By the way, I am almost ready to switch back to that awful firm called Adobe (greedy extortionists), because their Photoshop has way less bugs that Affinity Photo. I hate to do it, but Affinity costs me so much time, despite finishing a very long course.

Cheers, David.

My feelings exactly about Adobe. I've used their products for about 30 years and I now feel about them the same way I used to think about Quark.

I think Affinity have done a good job considering that the software is in its infancy and some things it does well (even better than Adobe) and others are just plain awkward. But to use it professionally it needs to be stable, reliable and polished. Hopefully new versions will smooth out the rough edges and it can become a true competitor to Adobe. God knows, we need something else.
