Looks like this command is missing from iPad version, I'm sure MEB will tell us otherwise, the good news is you can create a macro on the desktop version and then export it to iCloud then import it into your iPad.I attach such a macro here. To use select the layer of interest then play this macro.

Unless I’m missing something, you can simply select the transparent region of the layer with the Flood Selection Tool (‘magic wand’) and then invert the selection.

I find that method a bit hit and miss to be honest. This method just gives you the missing desktop commands directly.

I have put the following macros into this macro collection which can be imported to your iPad, if there are other requests I can add them in too.

Edit 2020-03-03: Removed Dropbox link and added macro library file direct. Updated to V3 of the Library.

Mud’s Macros V3
SelectionFromLayer - convert a layer into a pixel selection
SelectAllLayers - select all layers quickly
DeSelectAllLayers - de select all layers quickly
PencilPortrait - Convert Photo to pencil sketch (Credit: Alpha Sierra, YouTube)
InpaintCrop2 - fix edges after a straighten crop (Credit: Jim Welsh)
Inpaint - the inpaint option from the desktop.
Sketch Effect by R C-R - Converts to a sketch effect
Dave’s 6-Layer High Pass Sharpening - Uses 6 layers of sharpening
ExpandStroke - Expand Stroke from Designer
TextOnCurve - Text on Curve from Designer

Make sure to select layer mask

Go to channels studio, select layer mask alpha and select create spare channel

from spare channel you can select to load to pixel selection

Same way if you want to create selection from opacity layers, go to channels  studio,

select layer pixel alpha and create spare channel then you can load selection from spare channel

I hope developer can make easy way to create selection from layer just  like affinity photo desktop

Hi David, see my post above, the macro uses EXACTLY the same method as the desktop version, its literally one click.

Thanks to PMudditt for the Macro for Selection from Layer.  I have been trying to figure out how to make a luminosity selection in Affinity Photo for iPad. I believe it is Shift/Command Click. A macro for that would be great!

I’m not near my Mac or PC at the moment but if it can be done I’ll add it to my macro collection likely tomorrow.

Sorry I can't find such a command, are you sure it is available on Affinity desktop?

If you want luminosity selections and masks inside AP for iPad, you can use these. Download the zip files attached to these posts, un-zip them to get the .afmacros file(s), copy them to a cloud source that you can access from the iPad, and use the Import... choice from the Macros panel.

Hi maxmill,

To create a Luminosity Mask press and hold ⇧ (shift) + ⌘ (cmd) and click on the layer's thumbnail in the Layers panel. Currently this shortcut/command is only available in the desktop version. As suggested above you can create a macro there that performs that step and import it into Affinity Photo for iPad. I've attached the macro file below. Copy it to iCloud or other cloud service you may be using then on Affinity Photo for iPad go to the Macro Studio, click the small menu icon on the header of the Macro Studio panel and select Import Macros..., then select the file you have uploaded to the cloud service.

To use it select the layer you want to apply it to in the Layers Studio, open the Macros Studio, tap the button right below the Macro Studio header to change the category to Luminosity Mask (usually it says Default). You should now see a macro labeled create luminosity mask listed below that category. Tap on it to create a selection based on the luminance of the layer you have selected, then go to the Layers Studio, tap the Mask icon and select New Mask Layer. This will create a luminosity mask from the selection. You can now deselect the selection tapping the canvas with two fingers to display a pop-up menu then selecting Deselect.
