Selection Brush not growing as expected

Recommended Posts

I'm used to using the Selection Brush in a similar way to Photoshop: as you paint, the selection grows with similar colours.  I'm sure it usually works this way in AP as well, but for some reason right now it's not.  Instead, the selection is laid down by the brush exactly as if I was painting, without any growth to nearby similarly coloured pixels.  Is there some sort of "tolerance" setting I'm missing (cf. Flood Select), which has been set to zero?

Try enabling 'Snap to edges' on the context toolbar.

Yep, that's exactly it.  Thanks!

"Snap to edges" seems a weird name for that setting (it seems unrelated to each other "snap to…" option), but it's exactly the one I wanted.

I'm glad that's what you were looking for. Were you expecting the option to include the word 'Tolerance' or something like that? I'm just interested in your feedback :)

Tolerance would match with the similar-feeling setting in the Flood Select tool.  Or maybe something like "Grow to similar colours".

In retrospect I understand what "snap to edges" is expressing:  if there is an edge, the selection will go up to but not over it.  But if there is no edge (eg with my Perlin noise example), the setting still does something comprehensible and potentially desirable, and in this case "snap to edges" is confusing (at least to me!).
