Trying to install trial fails.

Get this error message:  Exception Create Directory failed.

At that point the install fails and ends.

Running Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview X64 build 16241

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi GoB,

Welcome to the Forums :)

Please could you try running the .EXE file as an Admin to see if that resolves your issue?

Thanks

Hey George, can you try this for me, please:

1. Windows key + R to bring up the run box

2. Clear the contents of the run box

3. Drag the .exe into the box

4. At the end add a space and then add the word /log

Once the installer fails if you go to the run box again and type %temp%/AffinitySetup/ and then check the folders (with a long string of characters) inside there for both an install.log file and a setup.log. Once you've got that could you attach it please?

Did everything as you requested.  The run of "C:/Affinity+Photo+Windows+Trial.exe /log" yielded the same error message as above.

Then ran "%temp%/AffinitySetup/". There is no directory "AffinitySetup" within the Temp directory"

%temp% is set to C:\Temp

OK, that's fine.

I tried turning off "Windows Defender Security" and the "Windows Firewall", didn't help.

Is anyone else having this issue with Windows Preview or is it just me?

George

PS:  Got an email telling me the trial version has expired.

Hi George,

Sorry about the late reply. I think the email is just automated and doesn't know exactly when the trial has expired. The countdown to the expiry date doesn't begin until the app is first successfully launched so we should still have opportunity to get to the bottom of this, should you wish.

Our install engineer has created an .exe file which you can extract and run. This will provide us with some diagnostic info. You can just click Copy to Clipboard' once you have ran it. It can be found on our Dropbox link here.

Hopefully this is something you are still interested in pursuing. If not, I can only apologise.

Ran the test program and almost instantaneously received the same error message as

No way to copy anything to clipboard or I have misunderstood your instructions.

I am now at Windows version 10 pro insider preview build 16257.

It will be later this year when Microsoft releases this or a similar version.  I think I heard October, but I can't recall exactly..

If you don't want to pursue this further, I understand.  It can be time consuming.

insider preview builds..... ouch, is that a supported OS?

I just installed the Insider Preview this morning and my trial worked. To be honest, I did expect it to work but kinda hoped the Insider Preview was the issue as it would have been easier to investigate.

@GoB - Please can you try this updated file. It should be able to run without giving you the same error as the Affinity app.

Hi George,

It looks like your TEMP directory doesn't exist. According to the log, it is set to F:\SaveThis\AffinityPhoto\affinitytest\%HOMED~1\Tmp\

There is something really strange about that. I've just tried setting up the same environment on a Virtual Machine and it seems to be ok and I'm not getting any error codes like you are. Can you do me a favour? Right-click This PC/My Computer > Properties > Advanced system settings > Environment Variables and take a screenshot of that screen that appears.

Thanks so much for your patience so far.

Yes, you are absolutely correct.  I traced to to this environment variable which I can';t understand why it would not be set, it is SystemRoot.

The %SystemRoot% variable is a special system-wide environment variable found on Windows NT and its derivatives. Its value is the location of the system directory, including the drive and path.  The OS sets this, probably at boot time.

I will have to try and figure out why that has happened

Thank you for all your help.  You have narrowed to problem down to were I think I can find a solution.  Thanks again.

What I finally did was change the local environment variables for user for Temp and Tmp as follows:

Temp = C:\Temp

Tmp = C:\Tmp

I know this works because I tried both of the test programs you provided and got no errors.  I haven't tried the trial yet because I don't have the time right now.  Will definitely try later.

These environment variables used to be set as follows:

Temp = %HOMEDRIVE%\Temp

Tmp = %HOMEDRIVE%\Tmp

Where HOMEDRIVE has the value C:

All this looks right when in the environment variable settings but does not appear to work when programs try to use these variables.

The values appear as %HOMED~1/Temp and %HOMED~1/Tmp which I just don't understand.

I hope this explanation makes sense.

Thanks for your time,

George

Since this doesn't appear to be a closed topic, and it is talking about what I have just encountered I am posting here. The difference is that I already have Affinity Designer installed  (purchased 6/27/17 and installed soon after) but today I downloaded the update which will not install but gives me the same error message as GoB was getting. I am running win10 Home with the latest updates.  Since I had no trouble installing initially, I don't know why I am having trouble now unless it is due to a major update of win 10 several weeks ago.

Hi tirzamay,

So the current release version is currently installed but you are unable to install the new 1.6 update over the top? Have you tried completely removing the 1.5 version from Control Panel? It might be worthwhile doing that to see if you can just do a clean install of 1.6.

It may also be worth trying the trial too (try Affinity Photo).
