Affinity Photo crashes during saving iPad 12.9 2017

Recommended Posts

I've been using Affinity Photo for two weeks on a 2017 12.9 iPad pro with Pencil running iOS 10.3.2. I have drawn a CMYK image with three layers and all was going swimmingly until yesterday, when with the majority of the image drawn, Affinity began to suddenly close without saving any recent changes. I updated to the latest version of Affinity Photo last night but the issue still persists. In an attempt to pre-empt the crashes I tried saving regularly by going back to the gallery. After several attempts, with Affinity closing as soon as I pressed the home button, it became clear that it was the act of saving that was causing the crash and closure. The crashing is immediate and no changes are saved.

Please offer some suggestions because I've been enjoying using Affinity, but this is driving me crazy.

On further inspection, Affinity is not closing completely. When it autosaves or I tap the home arrow in the top left of the screen to return to the gallery/home page, Affinity appears to close, because I am taken to the iPad home page with all my app icons. If I then double click the iPad home button to reveal all running apps, Affinity is still there with my image open, but none of my recent changes. I have also noticed, if I then relaunch Affinity Photo by double tapping the app icon, the gallery/home page opens showing my image thumbnail WITH the recent changes, but when I double tap that to open it, no changes have been saved and going back to the gallery page, the thumbnail is updated to show no changes.

So to summarise it seems Affinity Photo gets as far as making a thumbnail and then somehow takes me to the iPad home whilst continuing to run in the background, but with any recent changes eradicated...

I have found a work around. If this happens to anybody else, rather than start your artwork from scratch, try: exporting your file to DropBox (OneDrive threw up an error) as a full editable PSD file, then downloading it again and importing it back into Affinity Photo as a new file. I'm guessing, somehow Affinity Photo corrupted the file and by exporting and reimporting it sorted itself out.

Hope that helps somebody in the future. I hope more, that Serif sort out the bug that caused the file corruption in the first place.

You could also try Save as Copy from the Documents button at the top, next to the ... icon. Save it with History and you will have a fully editable file if the encounter a crash. You obviously have to remember to do this process though.

We should also be doing a better job of recovering files. I believe this is something development are working on. Sorry you've lost time and work :(

It is happening on all 'large' docs with many layers. It crashes at a random point, I restart the app and SOME of the changes are saved. I think it doesn't save the changes since I opened the file/reverts to last version. Exporting as psd definitely seems to solve it but it is a messy workflow
