I'm a newbie at photo editing.I'm trying to learn Affinity Photo on a Windows 8.1 laptop.I've read the tutorials and studied some of the Udemy courses by Simon Foster bit I can't get my head round layer masks.I'm practising on a photo where the top of the photo is too bright and the bottom a bit dark.I'm trying to use layer masks to do this using the paint brush tool.I create a layer mask by painting black over bottom of the photo then using Curves to darken the top half. However when I remove the mask, the bottom half of the photo is also darkened. Can anyone please give me a simple step by step guide how to do this.

Hi Vauxhall60,

Try using the Quick Mask tool instead, make sure the colour is set to white and paint over the area you wish to adjust. Once you finished 'painting' on your image click the Quick Mask button again, now apply your adjustment. Once that has been done click Select and Deselect.

Here's a link to our quick video tutorial on Quick Masks.
