Affinity photo ipad brush questions.

Recommended Posts

Hi all, a new affinity photo user here.

I just got the app on the ipad, and have not used this at all, so it's all still a tad foreign.

I tired looking up some information on my issues, but found it slightly difficult to locate answers to my questions.

So hoping some people can help me out here/ direct me towards the right place.

1. First issue regarding importing photoshop .abr files, I've tried with an .abr file with just one brush, and that seem to work. However when I tried to import a larger .abr file containing multiple brushes (around 700mb) the app would crash. The brushes are from photoshop cs5- cs6 so I'm not entirely sure if it's just a really large .abr file or it can only be one brush at a time?

2. Brush group adjustments, by default, there are multiple brush groups, with different kinds of brushes eg dry brush, drawing...etc. However it doesn't seem like you can edit / move / duplicate the brushes around between these groups? Or I just haven't figured it out. If anyone can clarify that, it would be great. The only thing you seemed to be able to do is edit settings, rename the brush, and delete the brush.

3. Having then tried to adjust some setting on the brushes, I've noticed that when I set brush size to 100% regardless of curve adjusts there is always this initial spot from the brush at a larger size as if I was apply a lot of pressure, however I would only be pressing extremely lightly, it was then jump to presumably what the size should be for that pressure, and then the rest of the stroke is fine.

Attached are some images of some of the strokes, and settings which I've adjusted it to, again I'm not entirely familiar with how all the settings work, but I cannot figure out how to change the setting to have just a nice smooth line tapering properly.

Hopefully someone will be able to enlighten me on my current situation.

Thanks!

Hello again, just to clarify the brush stroke little quirk I'm encountering.

Below are done with a basic round brush, and I've set just the size control to 100% pen pressure.

I have a few strokes in there where there didn't seem to be that much of an issue, where I've gone super slow, but a few strokes later, it doesn't matter if I was doing the same thing, there would be that first initial dot where the stroke starts.

I am pressing as light as I possibly can as you can see straight away after that first initial dot, the stroke goes to super thin.

any help/ suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks.

I am also new to Affinity Photo. While I'm not experiencing the same problem as your first question, I would also like to know the answer to your second question and experience the same thing as your third question, to some extent.

For the brush categories, I would really like to be able to duplicate and move brushes around. There are so many good brushes bundled with Affinity that I'd like to be able to have a custom category with the brushes I like most so I won't have to search through the categories to find the specific one I'm looking for. Duplicating brushes would also allow me to make edits to those brushes without harming the original.

As for the brush quirk, I seem to experience this most when the brush has 100% pressure sensitivity to the size and the brush is huge. While it still happens when the brush size is small, it's much less noticeable. I'd also want to note that I'm using the iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil.

I think there is just some functionality missing from the brushes settings.

I agree that I would like to be able to duplicate a brush, and make another one with slightly different settings, there also seem to be some weird file access functionality where you cannot pick from photos on the ipad, which currently, trying to make new brushes extremely hard.

I have some success loading smaller abr files over from photoshop, so I guess if someone was trying to import over brushes, you'll have to keep the size down, or do it in batches? (which at this point with the lack functionality to edit brushes) you will just end up with different groups, and have to switch around to try and find brushes.

Also the information ported over from photoshop brushes seems to be mostly just the brush shape, and all other settings are a bit of a hit and miss, requiring you to really work to make something similar to maybe a super heavy texture photoshop brush.
On the topic of textures, I was wondering if anyone know if there might be more than one texure layer mode, apart from on and off?

I think at this point we can only wait and see if these are added on in a later update.

I haven't had any problems importing large brush packs. I just recently imported an abr file that had about 200 brushes. But I also the problem with Photoshop brushes. I notice that it usually does import some of the settings, but they're set to "None" so it doesn't take effect, and the spacing is usually off, too.

I still have issues loading my current brush pack, I am not really sure what the problem is, as I've also loaded other brush packs with no issues.

On the plus side, it seems the new update has helped dramatically the brush pressure size issue I encountered way too often.

that is exactly what I tried! I hope there will be an option to rearrange brushes between the categories or copy and paste them. as it is now, it quickly becomes confusing

There is a known issue with brushes, effecting pressure sensitivity and also the initial dot and a response delay with fine brushes. Hopefully these will be addressed in an update before too long.

Hi Aeridis

When importing Photoshop Brush ABR file collections, do you know a way converting PC Photoshop Suite 6 brush collections? The publishing company chose Windows so although having 25 years of experience, I was shocked at the extreme differential  in the 2 formats. I just bought an iMac 27 and started the new Photoshop Subscription program, but did not recognize anything at all.

l'm still struggling and dumped Photoshop as well, but I am utilizing my own brushes in catagorized collections. I use them when designing jewelry elements. I have yet to design a single piece on my Mac and still use my fossil 1996 built PC running Windows XP. I know, I have already bought flowers for the funeral, but making the switch is driving me Gelumpus. I would love any comments you all might suggest, other than filleting my wrists. Thanx in advance.
