GPU is not feasible, they said...

and now, watch this:

In PencilSheep, Filters can be placed as interactive filter layers anywhere in the layer stack. This makes it possible to edit images in a completely non-linear way. Whenever a filter parameter or an underlying layer is changed, the filter layer is automatically updated. Fast recomputation is made possible through GPU acceleration.

GPU Acceleration

PencilSheep runs all performance-critical operations (layer blending, filters, paint tools, etc.) on the GPU. Filters can be updated in real-time and for many tasks, PencilSheep is orders of magnitude faster than other image editors.

Unlike other image editors (which either don't use GPU computing at all, or only offer partial GPU acceleration), PencilSheep has been specifically designed from the ground up to fully utilize the GPU for all image operations.

Full GPU acceleration is the key technology behind PencilSheep's unique Interactive Filter Layers.

It's pretty disappointing that Affinity hardly uses the GPU ... highly paralleled simple computations ... that's what a GPU is design for, isn't it ... and that should be exactly what's needed for photo and video editing and of course 3D rendering.
